Democs (DEliberative Meeting Of Citizens)

Martin Kohring | 24.08.2004 14:31 | Bio-technology | Education | London

The New Economics Foundation (nef) is an independent think-and-do tank that promotes innovative solutions to economic, environmental and social issues. Nef has developed an exciting new approach to grass-roots democracy, called Democs (DEliberative Meeting Of Citizens). It is a card game and structured discussion to involve people in public policy issues. Democs can be used to help people take part in democracy and help them reach a better understanding of different opinions on contentious issues.

Nef has developed Democs games on a wide range of different topics, including GM food, waste management, international trade, stem cell research (use of human embryo cells for biomedical research) and other science topics.

Nef can send kits to interested groups or they can come along and play the game at nef (3 Jonathan Street, London, SE11 5NH; near Vauxhall tube station in London). Games will be played at nef on a regular basis.

Democs games are scheduled for:

- Wednesday 25th August 6.30-9pm

- Thursday 2nd September 2.30-5pm

- Wednesday 22nd September 12-2.30pm

Democs facilitators training will take place on Thursday 16th September, 10am-5pm at nef. This is free. You'll learn about Democs and how to facilitate this new
democratic tool. Nef is particularly looking for people who can use Democs as part of their work or play:

- With young people aged 14+, mainly in secondary schools or universities, but also outside schools
- With a wide cross section of the population, especially underrepresented groups
- With people with lower literacy levels
- In science and science communication
- In informal education settings, like Adult Education

Nef will pay facilitators £10 per game facilitated. If you'd like more information nef can email you more details. If you cannot make this date and are interested in other possible dates, let nef know.

New kits are being developed on nanotechnology, use of animals in biomedical research, and vaccinations. If you have particular interest or expertise in these areas, please contact nef. Nef is going to develop kits on these topics and would like to get different viewpoints from people. It would involve a short phone call.

If you are interested in taking part in either of the above-mentioned Democs and/or the facilitators training at nef, email  democs@neweconomics.org or ring 020 7820 6329 to book your place.

Yours sincerely,

Martin Kohring
