On Thursday afternoon, 21st October, around twenty activists from the Hands Off Venezuela solidarity campaign gathered outside the Venezuelan consulate in London. They brought with them a surprise guest: George "Christopher Columbus" Bush, in statue form, who had Tony "the parrot" Blair sitting atop his shoulder. They were there to hear about three protesters in Caracas who had been jailed for toppling... a Columbus statue.

Banners were attached to the railings outside, reading "Hands Off Venezuela", "The Revolution Will Not Be Terrorised", and most importantly "Free the O12 Prisoners". With a low-key police presence, hundreds of flyers were given out to curious passer-bys, explaining why the picket was taking place, and after learning of the issue many people signed the solidarity petition demanding the release of the three political prisoners.

Speeches were made by two of the campaigners high-lighting the contradictory nature of a "Revolutionary" government. Some of their great achievements were mentioned, including the advances in health-care, education, housing and human rights. Their new constitution, the most democratic in the world, brings with it new methods and tools for changing society, which the Venezuelan people are busy doing.

However, the point was made that as a solidarity campaign, our support for the Bolivarian government is not unconditional; rather it is conditional on it retaining the support of the Venezuelan people. The fact that it still has this support was made clear from the overwhelming victory for President Chávez in the recent recall referendum, but it was established that Hands Off Venezuela stood in solidarity with the whole Bolivarian Movement, not just its leaders and officials but its grass-roots as well.

It was emphasised that the leadership of the Movement should listen and learn from its grassroots. The fact that the statue-toppling has received considerable support from the plethora of popular movements in Venezuela, as well as internationally, was underlined. It is significant that the toppling of the statue of Columbus (who Chávez himself has described as "worse than Hitler") was carried out publicly in full day-light without masks, which shows that this was a principled, political act of rebellion, rather than wanton vandalism.

Symbolically, after re-affirming Christopher Columbus' guilt in facilitating genocide against indigenous people of the "Pachamerikan" continent (which is a non-colonial term for Latin and North America), Blair and the monstrous Bush/Columbus hybrid were toppled to loud cheers. Lying in the street, they were covered with a sheet, and the crowd was reminded that November 5th is just around the corner (when traditionally an effigy of Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up Parliament, is burned on giant bonfires over Britain).

Another brief speech was made restating that the campaign was very supportive of Venezuela's Bolivarian government, in fact that was why it had been set up. However it is clear that in the in the case of the "O12 prisoners" they have made a mistake and are scape-goating three peaceful anarchists in order to avoid an embarrassing show-down with the King of Spain. Apparently the Royal had instructed his Ambassador to pressure the Venezuelan government into stopping the toppling, which is ironic for a "Day of Indigenous Resistance" (as October 12th was renamed in Venezuela by Chávez three years ago).

The protest ended with the announcement of an upcoming open debate on the legitimacy of the original statue-toppling action, and a promise to return if the O12 political prisoners are not released soon. An appeal was also made to the Bolivarian government to agree to hold a joint-trial for the more than 150 activists in Venezuela who all claim collective responsibility for the original action, as they have publicly demanded.

Another action was held today, O-21, outside the Fiscal Justicia in Caracas in an effort to liberate the 3 prisoners from the O-12 actions

At 11 am this morning, people began gathering in Parque Carabobo in Caracas, across the street from the office of the attorney general to protest for the release of the prisoners who were arrested after the a statue of Columbus was toppled in Plaza Venezuela in honor of the Day of Indigenous Resistance (see front page articles) There was a man making screen prints on tee shirts with picture of the statue of Columbus in mid-topple and text saying, "Yo tambien, soy responsable..." which is the buss phrase of the ongoing solidarity campaign(to learn more about the solidarity campaign read "Si Somos Responsables") There were also people handing out a newspaper style print out of an article pronouncing the next statues to topple (see front panel article La Proxima Estatuas a Derribar...) At about 11:30 banners were stretched out across the sidewalk that had slogans such as "Libertad a l@s camarad@s, Jucio a tod@s Nuestramerikan@s" and "A derribar el poder establicido y corrupto."

At about 12pm the group, which had by that point had grown to about 100 people, moved across the street to the the attorney general´s office. At that point a small group of about five were permitted to enter the building to present the document "Si Somos Responsables," (a document written and signed by over 200 participants and supporters declaring thre legitimacy of the the action and demanding the the prisoners either be freed or that all 200 of them get sent to a collective trial.) The document was accepted, but the participants were informed that it would take time to process and no definitive decision could be made at that time.

The five returned to the front of the building and annouced the news, which was followed by speeches promising to strengthen the campaign and move it beyond solidarity with their commrades to a general battle against the corruption that their detainement represents.

The action was closed with music and dancing and announcements for a meeting to begin building a "So Called Front of Pachamerican Liberation."

Would Bolivar have Toppled the Columbus Statue? Are the Venezuelan O12 prisoners principled peaceful protesters or provocative property-damaging vandals? Decide for yourself on Monday 25th October, at the Long Island University-Friends World Program, 403a Holloway Road, London N7 (between Odeon cinema and junction with Parkhurst Road, nearest tube Holloway Rd). Starts 5pm, refreshments and social after. This is the first in a series of open debates on issues concerning the emerging "Latinamerican Solidarity" movement here in London.

On Monday we shall be discussing the pros and cons of tearing down parts of the "national heritage", as well as the significance and effect of the original action and its aftermath. Will this divide the Bolivarian Movement, or strengthen it? What does this say about the power relationship between the leadership and its grassroots? Is this what "participatory democracy" really looks like, and how can international solidarity remain consistent in our support for the entire people in their fight against repression, exploitation and corruption across this whole rebellious continent? Join us in this debate to explore these issues deeper and help shape the grassroots solidarity agenda worldwide.
