Bin the Bid action

People (who will neither confirm nor deny whether they're students or not) disrupted a 2012 'Back the Bid' presentation last night at the University of London Union last night.

The 'Back the Bid' campaign had - rather optimistically, since only six supporters showed up (seriously!) - booked the main room in ULU, to explain (or maybe not) why destroying East London is a really good idea, and a wonderful thing to happen to our 'great nation' (seriously one of them said that!). About 10 people who oppose the bid, on various grounds, came to the meeting to disrupt, and explain why the Olympics would be a terrible thing to curse London with. The organisers were slightly bemused, which quickly turned to outright confusion when a few of us made the mistake of using multi-sylable words. ULU staff were equally confused and continually asked 'why haven't you gone through your democratic representatives, you have to do that first.' Ironically the guy saying this the most professed that he'd been at Genoa to protest against the G8. He stopped talking to us when we asked why hadn't he petitioned Blair and Straw to represent his views.

Anyhow we disrupted the meeting for a good 20 minutes until two very bored members of the Met showed up, at which point we tried to get a drink in the Gallery bar, only for us to all be told that we were banned for life by one of the staff. Apparently it says it in the ULUL guidelines somewhere. After explaining that she was also banned for life because - well it says in guidelines dunnit - we left.

Admitedly we did feel slightly bad leaving since as a group we constituted two thirds of their audience. I'm sure the six people left had a good time though.
