URGENT HELP RESIST the illegal eviction @ St. George's Tufnell Park NOW!

one of the nursery social centre collective | 11.10.2005 11:43 | Free Spaces | Repression | London

The Circle Community Centre project at St. George's in Tufnell Park is in the process of being illegally evicted. 30 police and 10 bailiffs illegally entered the project this morning and the project are asking for people to come and help RESIST the eviction NOW! They have made a call out for people to come along immediately and help support them, samba people, climbers, and people with cameras and video equipment to help witness the illegal actions of police and bailiffs.

One of the Circle Community Centre volunteers is currently at the high court trying to get a stay of execution. They said they'd be back in about 3 hours time. In the meantime people need to get down there as soon as possible and help RESIST!

Bugger!

11.10.2005 13:57

Am not in london :-(

That's a real shame. Underhand as it seems while people were in court :-(

The circle community space has been a welcome and vital place for many events. So much good work and happy times. London needs more free spaces!

I was one of the people who wrote to the planning department as part of the campaign to keep this is a community centre. Good luck all.

Phone number!!!!

11.10.2005 15:22

Please provide a phone number of eviction alerts and calls for help as by the time many people get them there maybe no point in them travelling across London to get there. If people provide a mobile number of somebody there then those think og going down to help can check it wasn't all over hours ago (like appears to be the case with St Georges).

mass eviction alerts and updates using textmob?

11.10.2005 16:14

Textmob.org is a cell phone messaging technology from the Institute of Applied Autonomy. It was popularised during the massive noRNC protests in New York.

wonder if it'll come in handy next time?

good luck people

love 'n rage to you all and don't forget to let the council and it's councillors know how you feel :0)

time for a mass prayer meeting? :)

"New owners Church on the Rock seek possession - yet another dodgy religous business appears out of nowhere ( wll ok - Lagos )"

perhaps we ought to have a mass prayer meeting when they start up their church, together with samba band, clowns, and other religious symbolism.

haha

Any chance of some real reporting?

12.10.2005 09:46

This has been some of the worst 'reporting' I've ever seen on indymedia.
What about some real information? What was the point on uploading photos as 'the latest from st georges' and not give any written information about what was happening?
No information was passed with those photos apart from the implication that it would be pointless to come down.

Please please please, even if you were in a hurry, it would be quicker to type up some real information than to piss around with (not exactly brilliant) photos.

Please please please, who what why when where! It's not rocket science.

thankyou for the feedback

13.10.2005 20:33

Er hi Unclear,

the pictures seem fairly self explanitory from where i'm looking. considering the time stamp, i think they explained the situation 'better than a thousand words'.

as a bit of background, everyone was pretty gutted at the time and there were more important tasks at hand like re-housing people and moving tat, hence no captions (the pics were uploaded on a wireless link during the proceedings)

if you cant work out what the situation was by the pictures, might i suggest you invest in a pair of glasses and/or a nu hed.

on a more pro-active note, once we're rested & re-established more info will be available on our website so keep checking in. you can also create a login & leave your email if you wish to be on our mailing list, we will be sending out an update in due course.

www.circlecommunity.org

a big thankyou goes out to everyone who came down on the call out and offered their support, it was greatly appreciated!

and not forgetting all those people over the year(s) who've supported & helped make st georges & circle community centre the amazing and beautiful place that it is. thankyou!

rest easy! we will rise agian... ;)

Another view, perhaps

15.10.2005 14:17

OK, let's look at this from another point of view - i.e. mine.

I live in the area. I have had to put up with concerts and parties that carry on until the early hours of the morning. In the past six months there have been fights and shouted arguments in the middle of Tufnell Park Road in the middle of the night, there have been things thrown out of plate glass windows, and then there are the crowds of people standing around outside even when the parties are over.

I presume the squatters didn't have a licence?

if you are going to post an article about an 'illegal eviction', please don't expect any sympathy from me.

People in glass houses shoudn't throw stones.

At last something will change

16.10.2005 21:04

This place as it stands is an eyesore. Smashed up cars, camp fires, squatters, noise... This place does nothing for Tufnell Park. It does not serve the community in any way. I am happy something has finally been done at last.

Illegal eviction of circle community

19.10.2005 00:50

Local resident. Why dont you just focus on the negatives and on your self, self, whingeing self.?
Admit it,you havent been into this community space while it was being socially and communally used have you??
Me neither, but I have visited them elsewhere and there are a lot of well meaning, positive people from all ages, cultures, backgrounds doing so much good work, creatively, for the general good and general well being of the world.
I am sorry to hear of your negative "middle of the night" experiences, but.........isnt London a major City where, sadly, these things do tend to happen occassionally.?

Dont Blame me.....I DIDNT vote Tory........or Conservative either.

LOSS OF YOGA CLASSES etc...

22.10.2005 15:01

I have been teaching yoga at the Circle Community Centre for the past 6 weeks. The classes have been free (£1 suggested donation to the centre for each student) and have been open to any member of the local community who read my flyers/leaflets in local libraries and shops. So far I've had 10 students returning, over half of whom had never been in this amazing space before. More people call me every week about joining. It is certainly a shame for me and I'm sure the yoga students if this brilliant venue is closed to us. We are also all local residents and the centre certainly provided something positive in our lives.

Well...

27.10.2005 11:52

I take the point of both Nottasquatta and Andi, I'm sure it was very well intentioned and did provide a positive service to some local residents.

I WAS concentrating on the negatives, but it was to highlight the fact that whereas everyone else writing on the site at that point seemed to want to eulogize about this amazing place, to a lot of us who live nearby it was actually a pain in the arse. And the fact that I haven't used the facilities or met any of the people doesn't stop it being a pain in the arse.

Sorry, but that's just the way it is...
