Venezuela and the 2006 WSF
by Tim Anderson SYD IMC 4/2/06

If we are looking at 'other' worlds, ie. other than imperialism and neoliberalism, Venezuela represents the most interesting alternative in recent decades.

Here is a popular socialist party which has come to government and has maintained power through elections, has wrested control of the country's natural resources from the oligarchy and the MNCs, confronted the empire, given a major priority to education, health and housing programs for poor people, increased levels of participation, resisted a US backed coup and is still faced by an aggressive Bush regime. It also faces an hostile domestic and international corporate media, which accuses it of every crime under the sun.

But the results are on the board, in terms of substantial improvements in education and poverty. State subsidies are now going to cooperatives and new public institutions. The economy is very strong (13% growth p.a. over 2004-05) due to public investment, general growth and higher oil prices (these contributed 25% of the growth, in 2005).

Ruddock hints at Australia Card
by elliot_k Perth IMC 2/2/06

Ruddock hints at Australia Card: Attorney-General Philip Ruddock says he may introduce plans to make Australian citizens carry a national ID card to avert terrorist attacks, despite security concerns and the 1987 defeat of a similar national card. [Wikinews-australia]

According to a recent poll of 1200 people, over 50 percent would support a national identity card, but 31 per cent were opposed to the ID card. Prime Minister John Howard refloated the possibility of an Australia Card after the July 7 London suicide bombings. Britian's Blair government is considering introducing cards identifying Britons by fingerprints and iris scans.

The Australia Card was defeated in 1987 after public outrage. The Prime Minister, who in the 1980s called the concept "un-Australian", is now willing to have the discussion: "This is an issue that ought to be back on the table..."

Philip Ruddock said: "policy should not be dictated by public opinion."

Work has begun on creating a coalition of lobby groups in readiness for a campaign: "Like the Australia Card debate, we are looking to establish a broad coalition of people across the political spectrum and from all walks of life,"

Ruddock's comments have been slammed by security experts, who say national ID cards do not make Australia any safer and could have the opposite effect.

Critics argue that, "ID cards cannot protect us from terrorism because an ID card cannot indicate intention." Ex-MI5 chief Stella Rimington, recently said ID cards were "useless" at fighting terrorism: "ID cards may be helpful in all kinds of things but I don't think they are necessarily going to make us any safer."

Others say the ID cards will not help improve security and would have the opposite effect. The card will require an "immense database" with "enormous" security risks. The Australian Privacy Foundation asked whether the "billions it would cost would be worth it", especially considering the "enormous intrusions into the affairs of the majority of law-abiding citizens".

Clowns take to Parliament Square in latest protest against SOCPA.

By mini mouse 26/1/06 London IMC

The rebel clowns - and many others - had spent the day at Bow Street Magistrates court (  http://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/london/2006/01/332263.html) expressing solidarity with five defendants who had been charged under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 132 (SOCPA 2005). The bill outlaws all "demonstration without authorisation" within 1Km of parliament.

These five defendants had had the audacity to hold signs reading 'We have the Right To Protest'. The magistrate must have thought they were very clearly Serious Organised Criminals indeed - because she found them all GUILTY.

Military to conduct massive training excercise in downtown Winnipeg
by Derek 28/1/06 Winn IMC

From April 30th to May 6th, 2006, more than 500 Canadian troops, backed by helicopters, armoured vehicles, and artillery, intend to transform downtown Winnipeg, Canada into an urban-warfare training playground in the largest training excercise of its kind ever held in Canada. Operation Charging Bison is intended to simulate situations Canadian soldiers "would encounter in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq."

What are we calling for?

We are calling for a broad range of actions to counter this training, from high-school walk-outs, to street theatre, to teach-ins, to direct action, to a national convergence, to solidarity actions. We encourage people to take the initiative to plan their own autonomous actions, but we're also eager to see co-operation between organizing groups.

We are planning a major day of action on May 1st, International Workers' Day.
