Protestor arrested at Davis Cup Picket

Serious criminal | 22.07.2006 19:39 | Lebanon War 2006 | Anti-militarism | London | South Coast

A protestor was arrested at the picket of the Israel-Britain Davis Cup tennis tournament in Eastbourne.

Around 35 people or more turned up to protest outside the Davis Cup tennis tournament today. A minibus from Brighton was followed by police all the way from Brighton to Eastbourne a fine example of wasting tax payer's money.

Outside the venue the many police in attendance behaved like bastards from the start pushing protestors around and forcing them under threat of arrest to the opposite side of the road behind a barrier.

Anyone leaving the cordon was followed through the streets of Eastbourne and the police gave the good people of Eastbourne a preview of the forthcoming police state being introduced by this Government. These days going to buy a sandwich is a potential criminal act so must be closely monitored by the police.

It seemed that our megaphone was upsetting unamed members of the public and so we were ordered to stop using it. We were given 10 minutes to stop using it. After only a minute the megaphone was handed over to one of Sussex Police's favorite protestors so they took their chance to nab him and immediately without warning arrested him.

He is now at Eastbourne Station. Saturday night in Eastbourne! The police station is probably the best place to be.

Sussex Police have an awful record of prosecuting Brighton Activists and I don't see the pattern changing now.

Please get down tomorrow for the singles match and some more police fun.

All of you are so brave picketing a tennis tournament against one individual in support of the party of god. Your just a bunch of Jew baiters. Of those who took part in this demo how many demos have they been on protesting against Muslim suicide bombers who murder Isrealis? Dr Gobbels would have been proud of you. Maybe Isrealis tennis players should wear a armband with the star of David on so protesters can identify them more easier. Better idea, fly to Syria cross the border and confront the Israealis in person. Wankers

What a suprise

Any criticism of the actions of Isreal and it's immediatley comparable to the Holocaust. To answer the question rather then making the Israeli players where a star of David armband why don't we make them carry little cards to identify themselves in the same way Israeli Arabs are forced to do.

The basis for the demo is Israel's invasion of the Lebenon and the tennis game is being targeted because it is being attended by Israeli citizens and it result will be considered important amongst the tennis community in Israel so a presecence there is a very good way of making sure that our objections are heard within the state of Israel.

Hopefully more people will be attending the Sunday demo because with numbers over 35 we can seriously attempt to disrupt the event or at the very least get noticed by the supporters attending it.

Nazis

Please inform us all, do the same mob who are targeting Jews at the tennis tournament intend to picket lets say any Muslim players because of Islam's treatment of women? In some Islamic countries, but by no means all, women seem to be held in the same regard as farm animmals. Of course you would not because that would be racist would it not. Mention the Jew though and the left mob are in full cry. Jewish people have been the most perscuted people in human history. Some of the Jew's tormenters are open in their hatred of Jews, such as the Nazis and the Soviet Union(which was ironic as many of the leadership in the Sovier Union where Jewish although towards the end Stalin started have these bumped of as well). Others like the mordern day broad left try to hide their racist hatred for Jewish people behind demos which just happen to include protests against Isreal. Look at this site its full of attacks against Isreal. Now I know many are concerned about the deaths of civilians myself included, but their are plenty on here who are using the present conflict as a excuse to rant against the Jewish people. Stormfront is looking identical to indymedia with its attack on Jews. Go through all the posts on here and you will see some which have nothing but hatred for the Jews in their comments. Some must be on the verge of being ilegal. Instead of racially harassing Israeali tennis players and spectators, get yourselves down to the Syrian embassy as they are the ones who control the religous fanatics of the party of god. When they kidnapped the Isreali soldiers they knew damm well how they would react. Why were the party of god attacking Isreal when Isreal pulled out of lebanon in 2000? They are driven by the racial hatred of the Jew just the same as their comrades who hold demos outside tennis tournaments. If it talks like a Nazi, acts like a Nazi, then its a Nazi, perfect description of the Jew baiters outside the tennis tournament.

I've never heard such rubbish in my life. Not liking Israel is not the same as not liking Jews. Many in the peace movement are Jewish. My partner is Jewish and absolutely hates Isreal far more than I do. So spare us this rubbish. There is anti-semitism out there which is likely to get worse because of what Israel is doing but please distinguish the seperate issues.

Boycott Israel

23.07.2006 10:07

Basically, as UK citizens, what can we do to express our thoughts and feelings of what is happening in Lebanon and Palestine at the moment? It is frustrating when the UK government supports the state of Israel, selling them weapons for example, buying their goods or, allowing an Israeli tennis team over.

Do you remember the boycott of South Africa, when the UK boycott played its part in dismantling apartheid? That is what is now needed from the British public against Israel.
Sanctions and boycotts from the Western powers that support Israel would put pressure on Israel to end its massacre in Lebanon and Palestine. I'm sure if this happened there would be a lot less deaths on both sides. At the moment 350(+) lebanese have been killed, one third of which are children. 35 Israelis have been killed, 2 of which are children. 20% of the population of Lebanon have been displaced.

I'm sure what we all want at this stage is to avoid a humanitarian crisis. I believe that we all have the power to Boycott Israel in any way we can. The demonstration outside the Davies Cup was in fact a huge success. We did not allow what is happening in the middle East to be ignored. We made lots of noise, gave information to the public about the boycott and received some support from passers-by.

Boycott Israel Now

23.07.2006 10:29

By indisciminately attacking civilians and civil infrastructure in Lebanon and Palestine, Israel has forfeited the right to engage with the rest of the world in sport, culture, trade and acedemia. Our government is failing to act, and supporting Israel by vetoing UN resolutions and supplying them with arms.

Don't be a passive bystander. Rmember the South African boycott and act now!

act locally

23.07.2006 12:59

Don't be a passive bystander yourself Sarah. While calls for boycotts of Israel as an apartheid state are perfectly just and necessary, the ongoing military cooperation with Israel is our most heinous link to the slaughter. Disrupting the arms trade between the UK to Israel should be prioritised over the other boycotts. After all, the Israelis are killing innocents with bombs not tennis balls. We should block, occupy and sabotage the 'joint venture' companies that allow Israel to bypass military import/export restrictions. There are arms factories the length and breadth of the UK who deal with Israel, and if we hit them often enough then we'd help take the profit out of war-profiteering.

Today's Protest

23.07.2006 17:02

There were far fewer police at today's smaller demo which, I think, reflects how Sussex Police view Brighton activists as there were at least ten times more in attendance yesterday.

One protester told me how he got to just behind the stand. He said "I blew my whistle as loud as I could right in front of the police. Although it was a pathetic thing to do as there was more noise coming from the match it just helped release a bit of frustration. I was then stopped and search by two policemen who took my whistle and details then followed me around while I looked for my friends. They later came up to me again much more agressively and said I was acting suspiciously and would arrest me if I entered the area again. This was a bit of a problem as I needed to meet my friends to get home to Brighton. In the end I just thought fuck them and went back to get my lift home and luckily they didn't see me."
"Why should I risk arrest just to make my voice heard. If it's a case of risking arrest for just being there then why not make it worthwhile. This just makes me even more angry at what's going on."

thinking like a donkey ...

... what it's about.
... what it's about.

... makes you an ass.

Pity this event happened the same day as the national protest.

Maybe next time ...

... aren't israel in englands euro qualifying group?

The disgusting media whores gave voice to only 2-3 seconds of israels 'stunning' victory in the davis cup and zero to you lot.

Perhaps a change in tactics.

Next time buy tickets, get in and disrupt.

Anyone remember the south african rugby tour at the hight of the struggle? Every match was met with pitched battles and disruption from INSIDE the grounds ... hence the cancellation of some matches and LOTS of news coverage.
