Dalston Theatre eviction update: no bailiffs yet!

E4e | 16.10.2006 13:08 | Culture | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | London

The eviction of Dalston theatre and the 3 adjoining houses (4-14 Dalston Lane, E8) is still pending.

Following a 'day of celebration' in the little square opposite the theatre yesterday (Sunday), the occupants of the theatre left the festivities to one side as they continued to prepared the building for the impending eviction, which they are intent on resisting. Despite keeping up the watch all through the night from the roof of 4 Dalston Lane, no signs of bailiff-activity have yet been spotted.

The 'day of celebration' took place outdoors in the square next to the peace mural opposite the occupied site. The day began with Food Not Bombs, where food was shared between friends, locals and passers-by, and continued with juggling antics, Theatre of the Oppressed workshop, open mic and guerrilla cinema film-screenings. There was also a collective effort to transport the roof garden from the soon-to-be-demolished building, re-planting it in the little square, as part of an ongoing process to re-claim land for the benefit of the community, and following in the tradition of guerrilla gardening.
The 'day of celebration' was just one of many times that the square has been used for community activity, with the idea of providing a space where individuals and groups from the local area can come together, learn from each other's struggles and in this way build trust and co-operation between each other, to re-inforce our own strength outside of the council's plans.

The cafe (4 Dalston Lane) remains open every day 12pm-7pm, and welcomes anyone to come along and support the resistance in any way they can. We meet tonight at 7pm for anyone interested in helping out.
