A temporary and experimental phone service has been launched especially for the week of the Camp For Climate Action. It provides easy access to news taken from the indymedia newswire and info from the climate camp web site for people who are visually impaired or unable to read a computer display for other reasons.

0207 043 3783

Using an ordinary phone, people will be able to call up and listen to the indymedia time-line covering the event or check directions to the camp etc. Additional features include being able to have their call forwarded to the seperate indymedia reporting and dispatch numbers or to record audio reports and have them sent to indymedia for uploading.

The access number is 0207 043 3783, which is a local rate number so call charges will be minimal or free called from phones with free minutes. For many people this means it will be cheaper to call indymedia dispatch via this number than to make the call direct.

While this initiative makes available information from both indymedia uk and the climate camp website, it has been setup completely independently from both. It has been created to explore the possibilities that this increasingly cheap telephony technology may offer as a 'new' medium for reporting and disseminating news. The system uses the open source telephone exchange software 'asterisk' and also makes use of open VoIP standards.

Alternative access numbers will be provided in the event of any disruption to the service.

Other cool stuff

This 'new system' is actually a sub section of a much bigger experimental phone service that includes access and features relating to several indymedia sites. For example, it allows people to listen to the global indymedia news headlines or listen to pitsburgh indymedia's weekly radio show. Some Indymedia UK features have been implemented, including the access to the top feature which is the service currently being used for the climate camp sub section. Other services available on the system include a set of telephone chat rooms for the UK traveler community plus personal voice mail boxes for various people involved in the open source movement.

It will be interesting to see how well the climate camp stuff works and whether similar things are set up for the No Borders Camp and DSEi.
