Video of attempted mass police incursion onto climate camp site

It happened within minutes of warnings that the police were threatening to send on their Forward Intelligence Teams and that resistance would not be accepted. However they appeared to have misjudged the situation based on the general camp tolerance to the regular low level police rounds of the site. When twenty five closely bunched police entered the site they were quickly confronted and forced to tune back. Withing the space of ten minutes they had been ejected from the camp and a stand off across no mans land continued until the torrential rain sent the police back to the safety of their vehicles.

During the stand off, one protester super clued herself to the main gate onto the field. This gate is in the total control of the police and was the entrance they had use to make their incursion. She remained locked to 'their' gate for over an hour while the specialist police team used solvents to remove her. She was eventually removed and arrested, taken off site wrapped in a space blanket and bundled in to a police van.

Fucking hell...

15.08.2007 00:33

...we've long claimed, we are everywhere. Coming together we're unstoppable.

And that was just a hundred. What could a couple of thousand do?

mighty empowering stuff

Fantastic!

15.08.2007 00:59

Good work chaps. A couple of questions though:

What were those green canisters the police seemed to have? I'm read somewhere else that it might be CS gas. What the hell would they use that for?

And what was the senior officer at the end of the vid talking about? It didn't seem that a single copper even went to ground, let alone got kicked. Anyone see any of this actually happen??

Seems yet another incident of dickhead coppers trying their hardest to undo the work that their more reasonable colleagues decide to do... funny that it always seems to the FIT or covert/overt surveillance teams that have the worst coppers...

15.08.2007 05:58

Some MP4s will play in Windows Media Player but if not I suggest you download the free open source VLC media player which can handle lots of formats.  http://www.videolan.org/

Can it be put on Youtube ?

15.08.2007 09:00

I would put it on Youtube but I am not sure if CampClimate would allow me permission ?
I think CC will themselves put it on YT.

Green canisters

15.08.2007 09:37

The green canisters were probably fire extinguishers.

Perhaps the police had worked themselves into so much of a frenzy that they thought they would be attacked with petrol bombs.

Kicked?

15.08.2007 09:50

What the f***? Did I hear that right? The guy at the end says "To reiterate...officers came under sustained attack... and were kicked repeatedly. Officers on the floor were kicked when they tripped over guy ropes and tents..." No matter how many times I watch that video I still can't see the scene he describes.

What I do see is a bunch of angry coppers with CS gas canisters in their hands -- ready to use -- and a bunch of protesters pushing them back. I see the police repeatedly grab and punch at the protesters, but the response is completely non-violent. And what were the riot police for!? Christ, when did sitting around drinking tea under canvas and talking about changing the world make you an enemy of state. UK Plc vs. the people, but the people will prevail!!

well done

15.08.2007 10:10

have to say well done to the climate campers in forcing the filth off site with out loseing there cool. looks like the met are gonna say you were a violent mob [ what's new]... reckon it'll be the TSG heavy mob next time so be prepared, really inspiring video, regards

Bring on the riot police

15.08.2007 11:37

your illegally tresspassing on someones land who rumour says has given the police permission to enter his land.
your the ones breaking the law and as far as im concerned while the extra runway will destroy a lot of land and homes i still say send in the riot police and pull down your camp

oh dear

To the naive comment

15.08.2007 12:05

"No matter how many times I watch that video I still can't see the scene he describes."

That's because the actions he reports are not shown in the edited video.

Impressed at the relatively restrained behaviour on both sides. Being outnumbers Lots-to-one prolly helped the police keep their own behaviour in check ;)

to the last commenters...

15.08.2007 12:21

...who seem to have wandered here from the Daily Mail site, or elsewhere. the police liaison has been good natured so far, with the cops allowed to have 4 people wnadering around escorted at will, to reassure themselves that the campers are not the violent lunatics that the press and themselves would like people to believe. they have decided to breach this goodwill and to try to provoke a response that would justify their expensive, wasteful and unnecessary or counter-productive levels of repressive policing. the campers responded in an exemplary manner, hands in the air to show non-violence, showing solidarity and resolve to maintain the policing agreement that had been in place. well done. if no mainstream press were there (surprise surprise), this footage should be sent to BBC etc to show what goes on when the eyes of the world are turned.

Oh dear, oh dear

15.08.2007 13:25

As far as I know the campers are not disrupting a lawful activity on the site nor has an interim possession order been granted for the site so the campers are not trespassing and are occupying the land quite legally.

.

Legal or illegal? Who cares?

15.08.2007 16:16

To make the necessary changes in society, we are going to have to break the law. Congratulations to all those who resisted the police. Off! Off! Off!

Now they have an excuse

15.08.2007 18:22

They engineered this confrontation to give them excuse. They now have it. Watch yourselves out there guys. I'm sorry I can't be with you.

Let's avoid the non violent spin

17.08.2007 01:29

The pushing the police off the site was a great and empowering thing to do.

However let's not kid ourselves and rewrite history by saying this was a non violent action. It was not. The police were pushed off site because they attacked us and we fought back. The police did not back off because people put they're hands in the air, they backed off because of people pushing and kicking them back and through force of numbers.

It is dangerous to write our own victories off as non violent when violence was invovled. Yes, that violence was a response to a total provocation by the police. Our violence was self defence. But to say protesters didn't push and kick back is ludicrous and nothing more than spin.

We need to say when and why a violent response is sometimes necessary and justified. We do not need to hide behind a pacifist paradigm. The police attacked us, we fought back and this was the right response.

requesting raw footage

20.08.2007 11:13

Hey-ho, r2r.

I'd like to see some* or all of the raw footage if that's possible. Contact details are on my site and I have a post about this video and its appearance on YouTube here:
 http://www.bloggerheads.com/archives/2007/08/get_orf_moi_lah.asp

(*If some is all I can manage, my preference would be any footage near those pesky guy ropes.)
