Veg*n Climate March in London

The Campaign for Eco-Veg*nism | 21.10.2007 20:27 | Animal Liberation | Climate Chaos | Ecology | London

Be part of history in London! Be part of the biggest ever mobilisation of vegetarians and vegans on environmental grounds!! Veg*nism is the solution to many of the catastrophies facing the planet - it`s time to tell the world!!

VEG*N CLIMATE MARCH 2007

SATURDAY 8th DECEMBER in LONDON

Join the march to:

- Demand that world leaders stop propping up the animal farming industries that cause climate change.

- Raise awareness amongst environmentalists and the general public that their choice of diet is critical to the survival of the planet!!

Upto 30,000 environmentalists are expected to join the National Climate March on Sat 8th December 2007 to "demand that world leaders take the urgent action we need to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate". The National Demo in London will be one of many demonstrations on climate taking place all around the world on the same day, midway through the UN Climate Talks in Bali. See  http://www.globalclimatecampaign.org

Veggies & vegans should be there in our 1,000`s, to demand that world leaders recognise that a massive proportion of climate change is caused by livestock farming and the production of meat/dairy products. World leaders must stop supporting the animal farming/food production industries responsible for this devastation and begin to scale them down before it`s too late, or ultimately, we`ll all pay the price!!

"The livestock sector accounts for 18% of global greenhouse
gas emissions - more than transport, which emits 13.5%" -
Livestock`s Long Shadow - A report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Nov 2006 See  http://www.virtualcentre.org/en/library/key_pub/longshad/A0701E00.htm

Some of the environmental marchers will already be veggie/vegan, but the majority will not. The chances are, many of these people will be unaware of the full extent to which animal agriculture is responsible for climate change. This event represents a fantastic opportunity to inform many thousands of environmentally conscious people of the devastating impact that meat/dairy production has on the planet. The world`s media will be there, so there is a very real chance that our message will be heard by millions more people. Please join the march with banners/placards/leaflets etc, and urge the marchers and general public alike, to change their diet for the sake of the planet, people and wildlife!!

This Global Day of Action has become an annual event. On Sat 4th November last year, an estimated 30,000 people took part in the climate march and subsequent rally at Trafalgar Square, simultaneous with hundreds of thousands more at events across the globe. In London, there was a sea of homemade banners/placards, samba bands, hundreds of cyclists and many people in imaginative costumes. The most magnificent aspect of the day was that such a wide cross section of society and groups took part. There were members of Greenpeace, Oxfam, Wildlife Trusts, Islamic Relief, trade unionists, RSPB, Ramblers Association, CAFOD, Friends of the Earth, Womens Institute, Christian Aid, People & Planet etc alongside grassroots campaigners & anarchists, all coming together to tackle the biggest issue threatening the planet. Sadly, very few people were there to promote the environmental benefits of veg*nism, but it will be very different this year!!

ASSEMBLE 12NOON at MILLBANK (WESTMINSTER TUBE)

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU!
Please don`t rely on other people to take leaflets, banners etc for you!

- Leaflets - All of the national groups that campaign on veggie/vegan issues produce excellent leaflets that explain the environmental reasons for adopting plant based diets. Please contact Viva , The Vegetarian Society , The Vegan Society , Animal Aid , Peta etc, most of whom will probably supply leaflets free of charge.

- Banners/placards - Please use your imagination! Take a look at veggie/vegan websites for relevant quotes and ideas. The bigger, bolder and more colourful your banners, the clearer your message will be.

- Costumes/props - Take a look at the photos from last years event on the Campaign against Climate Change website Why not get together with some friends, decide on a theme and construct some props & costumes that will really hammer home your message! Once again, use your imagination! Click the following link for a guide to making props on the Friends of the Earth website.  http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/how_tos/cyw_21_props_shoestring.pdf

- Your friends! - Please encourage all your veggie/vegan friends to join you. The amount of impact we have will be determined by how many of us there are, so please do all you can to promote the event(see leaflets & posters below). The best thing about this march is that it`s not only a very effective way to raise awareness, it will also be great fun!!! :)

TRANSPORT
There will be transport available from towns and cities across the UK, coordinated by local green groups etc. The Campaign Against Climate Change have a comprehensive list of transport contacts on their website.  http://www.campaigncc.org But if you have lots of interested people in your area, why not organise your own veggie/vegan minibus or coach! More veg*ns will be encouraged to attend if they can travel with likeminded people! Let us know your transport details and we will display them on our website. Email  info@veggieclimatemarch.50webs.com

HELP TO PUBLICISE THE EVENT
We have produced a leaflet and poster to help promote the event. Please download, copy and distribute them across the UK. Hand out leaflets to friends, colleagues, your local veggie/vegan/animal rights group etc. Display the posters on noticeboards at your place of work, church, community group, healthfood shop, library etc.

To download the A5 leaflet(2 on a page) click here  http://www.veganmidlands.org.uk/downloads/dec8leaflet.pdf

To download the A4 poster click here  http://www.veganmidlands.org.uk/downloads/dec8poster.pdf

If you`re not able to print them yourself, we may be able to post some to you, please get in touch, email  info@veggieclimatemarch.50webs.com

It seems vegetarians aren't actually welcome??

22.10.2007 08:15

The post invites people to join this block for two reasons:

To demand that world leaders stop propping up the animal farming industries that cause climate change and to raise awareness amongst environmentalists and the general public that their choice of diet is critical to the survival of the planet.

By this criteria it would seem that vegetarians, whose diets often rely on the factory farming of animals and who's dietary choice is responsible for the waste of the vast amounts of energy needed to turn plants into cheese and milk, are not actually welcome.

I'd say that was a fair position myself, but the message in the post seems mixed.

The green sunflower logo is the symbol of the Vegan Society but is here used in a Vegan/Vegetarian campaign.
Why?

(I'm not a member of the Vegan Society)

Vegetarians ARE welcome

We don`t believe we are sending out mixed messages on this. The message is quite clear, we are calling on vegetarians and vegans to march on the streets of London to promote their eco-friendly diets/lifestyles to others and demand that governments stop supporting the farming industries that play a major part in causing climate change.

Vegans will obviously have more to shout about than vegetarians, but the fact is that beef/cattle farming is said to be the most environmentally damaging of all animal farming practices. By choosing to drop meat from their diet, vegetarians have made a significant contribution towards reducing their personal ecological footprint. Why shouldn`t such people promote the eco benefits of their diet and encourage others to follow suit?

We are ourselves vegan now, but we used to be vegetarian. We like to think that vegetarianism is a stepping stone towards veganism. Why should vegetarians be excluded from an event such as this simply because they havn`t yet made the full transition to a vegan lifestyle?

I`m sure there are some out there that say vegansim doesn`t go far enough. They may say that we can`t call ourselves `eco-vegan` because we are not vegan organic or rawfood vegan. So perhaps it would be hypocritical for plain vegans to march because we have not yet taken that extra step or two?!!

The Vegan Society trademark includes `vegan` alongside the sunflower. The sunflower alone is not ordinarily used to represent veganism. But the fact is that we are vegan and we advocate vegan diets/lifestyles as the most eco-friendly, compassionate and healthy choice.

Please don`t look for faults in this campaign and event. If by attracting a mixture of veggies/vegans to London we can raise the profile of plant based diets as eco-friendly diets, and at the same time turn some meat eaters veggie/vegan and some vegetarians vegan, then it will have been successful. Please join us and help to raise awareness!
