rampART on the defensive

squat the lot | 29.12.2007 17:25 | Culture | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | London

The rampART social centre in London is finally facing eviction after almost 4 years of providing a non-commercial venue for a wide range of activities. On the 12th of December, the social centre and the squatted houses in the street were all served with notice of court proceedings. On the 20th, the case was heard and a possession order granted from the 3rd of January 2008. However, the occupation has continued and the social centre is open as normal. An appeal has been lodged and evcition held off until a decision about the appeal has been made.

Meanwhile, there have been various meetings to organise opposition to the threat and open a new space. There was also an assembly on the 6th Jan to look at setting up a group to support London social centres and maintain continuity.

Farewell?

02.01.2008 20:40

"Farewell" might be a bit premature. An appeal is going in tomorrow (3rd January). Could work, but don't hold your breath. Depends on the usual completely random factors (what side of bed judge gets out of that morning, etc.) but there is quite a juicy appealable point. Appeal includes an application to stay any eviction until the appeal is heard and that but should work.

farewell

03.01.2008 12:14

On new years eve a party was held at the rampART to bid farewell to 2007 but not farewell to the social centre quite yet. A couple of hundred people partied the night away, seeing in the new year while raising a lump of cash to lodge an appeal against the possesion order which is being filed today.

So, the rampART is not dead yet and you can expect news of a new space openning up any time soon.

where's 'the meat'?

'to 2008' says that there was a NYE party that had a couple of hundred people in attendance - did anyone approach them about resisting the eviction? will it be resisted at all?

rampart is such an institution of all stripes of activist in london. it can attract hundreds to its events, so why can't it mobilise those people to protect it against greedy property developers?

needless to say, though, i'm looking forward to new centres popping up around london soon.

indymedia is not the place to discuss such stuff, that's what meetings are for. the 'owners' don't yet have a warrent to reposses the buildings and when they do you can be sure you'll hear about it. in the meantime there is the appeal. everything has it's time and place.

I doubt if anyone from RampARTTTTT will resist the eviction, that's not what they're about is it?

Read between the lines people...

where's the politics?

stupid baseless mud slinging

Good to see indymedia comments are living up to their usual quality with armchair warriors assisting the unity and effectiveness of 'the movement' by making anonymous baseless accusations. Anyone with half a brain would go to a meeting or speak to people in person rather than engaging in spewing shit on the newswire. People from ramparts have taken part in resisting attempted evictions at previous social centres and also nearby squatted housing projects.

As has already been pointed out, there is no eviction date yet for the ramparts and there have been many opportunities for people to engage in the process of fighting to keep the space which obviously these armchair warriors have not bothered to explore.

Indymedia is not a suitable forum for discussing strategy, tactics or plans for any situation other than perhaps past or totally hyperthetical situations. Anyone attempting to engage people in such discussion is either dangerously stupid or working for the enemy!

Disinfo

To my knowledge, there is nobody involved in the ramparts that has a trust fund apart from the owner of the building. What is it with all this bullshit devide and rule crap posted on indymedia these days?
