Che Guevara's deputy, Orlando Borrego, coming to Britain

Rock around the Blockade | 13.02.2008 14:17 | Workers' Movements | London

Three Cubans with intimate knowledge of the Cuban revolution are coming to speak at meetings throughout Britain from 21 February to 4 March. One of them, Orlando Borrego, was Che Guevara's deputy from 1959-65. Fidel Castro's illness has thrust Cuba into the spotlight and these speakers bring first hand experience to the discussion of Cuba past, present and future.

The inaugural event is hosted by the Venezuelan embassy at Bolivar Hall at 6.30pm on Thursday 21 February 2008: Bolivar hall, 54 Grafton Way, London W1T 5DL, free to attend.

‘Orlando Borrego is so identified with me all that’s missing is for him to get asthma and we would be the same person’ – Che Guevara, Bolivia 1967

Orlando Borrego, Che Guevara’s closest comrade in Cuba, will be speaking for the first time in Britain (first public meeting is in London on Thursday 21 February).

Between 21 February and 5 March 2008, Borrego will be speaking at meetings throughout Britain alongside Jesus Garcia, elected local government representative and author of five books on socialism and democracy, and by Yoselin Rufin, a young female leader of Cuba’s Federation of University Students.

Orlando Borrego, now aged 71, worked with Che in the Ministry of Industries from 1959 to 1964. Since then Borrego has continued in the leadership of the Cuban government, today serving as adviser to the Transport Ministry. He frequently travels to Venezuela where he gives seminars to the National Assembly, economists and policy makers on Che Guevara’s approach to economic development.

Representing three generations of revolutionary Cubans, the Cuban speakers will travel from London to Glasgow, speaking to audiences in schools, universities, community centres, trade unions. See www.cubansarecoming.org for full tour details. The tour is sponsored by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers.

Helen Yaffe from Rock around the Blockade said: ‘This tour takes place at a fascinating moment in Latin America. The relationship between Cuba and Venezuela is reshaping the continent. Che’s influence can be felt in the revolutionary upsurge and this tour provides us with a chance to hear about it first hand.’

He exactly like the same person as Guervara except fot the asthma? So he's a cold blooded, politically driven murderer just like Che is he? What a pity then that he didn't emulate Che by getting killed 40 years ago.

you keep saying you don't like anarchists- why post on a site run on anarchist principles then? and please stop posting on the manchester pages with international commentary. Mancunians will still read the UK pages, stop bombarding it with this stuff.

I think you'll find , Mr. @ that....

the Cuban revolution sought to destroy extreme capitalist exploitation , wage slavery, gangsterism , illiteracy and many other things affecting the majority of the Cuban population.

Do you wish that these things should return?

You sound like the kind of person who would cut off his nose to spite his face.

If its not anarchy attack it. And whilst attacking you are taking sides with the very same things you are supposed to detest.

What a small and shallow world you live in.

Come see for yourself!

I've been part of building for this speaking tour and it's going to be amazing. People who attack Cuba often don't know much about it at all, not surprising considering the CIA propaganda which is shown freely on British and American news channels. But there is another reason why people don't support Cuba - if they support the rich. Cuban socialism shows that another society is possible, but it is a society to benefit the majority, not the minority. Cuba shows what a working class in power can achieve, so of course it is under attack. Cuba is a threat. It is a threat because it demonstrates an alternative to capitalism, and there are some very powerful people and institutions who do not want us to see this alternative. This Cuban speaking tour is our chance to see for ourselves and engage in debate with three generations of Cuban revolutionaries. See you there!
