Be sure they are genuine

The organizers of this event must be sure none of the cases they highlight are bogus.
I remember R4's Today programme a few years back getting all excited about an alleged asylum seeker who was being deported back to Zimbabwe. He claimed he was gay and that he would be killed by the Mugabe regime.
Turned out he was in fact a South African and a notorious liar.

A good question would be to ask the asylum seekers why they did not seek haven in the first safe country they reached.
The vast majority of asylum seekers here have passed through numerous safe countries to get here, in violation of the Geneva convention where they are supposed to seek asylum in the first safe country they come too.

You've been reading too many tabloids mate

In response to Zac, it's such a typical and unimaginative attitude to latch on to one story where an asylum seeker told a fib to then cast doubt on an entire group of people. The vast majority of people claiming asylum in the UK do so because they are fleeing war, persescution, violence, rape and other atrocities. They are forced into poverty by UK government policy and increasing numbers are being forced into destitution once their claims have been rejected. To talk of 'bogus' asylum seekers is nonense in a legal sense (an asylum seeker who feels under threat from war, violence or the threat of persecution). It's the type of xenophobia that has been consistently whipped up by the cowards who write for the tabloids in a vile attempt to a make scapegoats of individuals, many of whom have witnessed unimaginable horrors. The whole point of an event such as this is to hear their story and let them speak for themselves, rather than be spoken for by uninformed and prejudiced opinion.
