Billed as a celebration of '60 years of the State of Israel', an 'affirmation of solidarity with and support of Israel', the controversial Salute to Israel march made it's debut in London for the first time on Sunday 29th June 2008.

The event started with a march through london, and ended with a 'concert' and political speeches in Trafalgar Square. There were several counter-demonstrations by Israelis against Zionism, student groups and Palestinian solidarity groups.

Disgraceful

29.06.2008 21:45

It was appalling to see so many promoting and celebrating Israel. I heard one yob say to an asian man 'Why don't you go home....I hope they bulldoze your home'. Him and his friends then chanted Israel like a football chant. Showed themselves to be the hooligans of the nation they were supporting. I was glad to see the FIT squad snapping these twats. I wonder if there were any arrests on their side? There were tons of police. I think if there had not been it would of seriously kicked off.

Free Palestine!

Arrests etc

I am aware that a peaceful protester was arrested for breach of the peace while handing out flyers giving information about the occupation.

I am also aware that others protesting peacefully for Palestine were stopped and searched under Terrorism Laws (Sections 44 and Section 1).

I do not know of, did not see or hear about any Israeli's being searched, followed or arrested. However, they were often asked to move on by the police when being particularly aggressive to peaceful Palestinian protestors.

Liberate Palestine

Hi,
I did get images of the guy who handed out flyers being arrested, and also ones of the people with the Palestinian flag being questioned by police and led away.
I'll post these tonight.

Correction

I'd just like to add this correction over an error on the captions-
The protesters holding the banners were in fact part of a vigil for 'Jews for Justice for Palestinians', not all of whom are anti-Zionist.
