UN Sanctions on Iran: Political Confrontation, Iran's Response to US Threats

10-03-2007 02:14 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | World

The US so far has not directly targeted the clerical leaders of Islamic Republic namely Supreme Leader Khamenei and former president Rafsanjani. Instead, it has pointed at President Mahmood Ahmadinejad who has stayed firm against US pressures. The US is trying to link Ahmadinejad and his affiliated Sepah-e Pasdaran with supplying weapons to anti-US militants in Iraq. Ahmadinejad has popularity among Iran’s underprivileged class who were disappointed with former clerical presidents due to their inability to enhance economic welfare for the poor. It is unlikely that US can cause Ahmadinejad to be deposed by any means.

David Hicks is a 31-year-old Australian convert to Islam who was "captured" by US forces in Afghanistan. Actually, he was “sold” by warlord bounty hunters to the American military. Mr. Hicks has rotted in the prison at Guantanamo Bay for five years without charge, without trial and without conviction. Until recently, Australia's conservative prime minister, John Howard, was content to leave his compatriot to rot in an American prison camp.

US ally Musharraf in a tangle over Iran

08-03-2007 17:24 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | World

The intense pressure from Washington on President General Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan to be cooperative in the "war on terror" is yielding dramatic results, although perhaps not of the kind initially anticipated.

The Pakistan-Iran relationship, which has never been easy, has nosedived to a low point in recent weeks, even as Musharraf remains under pressure to do more in clamping down on al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Pakistan's tribal areas.

06-03-2007 20:41 | Repression | Terror War | Birmingham | World

Moazzam Begg

British national Moazzam Begg was a prisoner of the United States for over three years, first at Bagram and Kandahar in Afghanistan, and then at Guantanamo Bay. He was also one of the first six men designated as eligible to be tried by military commissions. He was abruptly released two years ago, and the British authorities cleared him of any involvement in terrorism related activities within hours. He lives with his family in Birmingham, England, and is currently the spokesperson for the activist website Cage Prisoners. Mr. Begg is the author of “Enemy Combatant: My Imprisonment at Guantanamo, Bagram and Kandahar”. On March 1, 2007, I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Begg by telephone.

THE POLITICS OF CRIME IN AUSTRALIA TODAY

06-03-2007 02:13 | Analysis | Repression | Terror War | World

To suit their own political ends
How is it that Prime Minister John Howard can accuse other people of some crime or lies? No, you do not need to be clairvoyant or have any special supernatural talents to meet up with or to see one of the more see-through inhabitants of politics in Australia today. You just need a strong heart and an eager mind. While other people, who are being accused, belittled, tainted or desecrated by numerous criminal politicians and their media allies. Politicians who don't lead us by any form of example and who break their own morals, principals, values, and ethics. Politicians who break their own laws in order to deceive us and to suit their own political ends.

The Blood
In reality this is just a waste of taxpayer's money. The rules of evidence and standards have been reduced to compliment the draconian laws that go along with it. This is just a show trial for political purposes and all Australians should bow their heads in disgrace that the war criminal John Howard has stooped so low in order to continue his fear mongering and resource wars in the middle east.

Kurdish issue: Turkey to the negotiation table, Iran to the front!

05-03-2007 02:32 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | World

There is no question that neither Turkey nor Iran is willing to engage in a conflict with the Kurds. But, the fact that the negotiation process in Turkey has been, by and large, led by the USA, means that there is less hope for a healthy solution. US policy of bringing Turkey to the negotiation table while engaging Iran in a conflict will lead to tension between Turkey and Iran. As long as the USA and the UK hold the Kurdish trump card, PKK trump card, PJAK trump card, terror trump card, they will destabilise all the countries in the region.
