Seven activists from Faslane Peace Camp and Trident Ploughshares entered Faslane naval base this morning with four members of the group slipping past guards and reaching points up to 100 yards inside the base.

Peace Campers scaled the gasometer in Helensburgh to deliver a response to reports in the local media welcoming investment in Trident replacement.

Two Peace Campers entered the the Explosives Handling Jetty area at RNAD Coulport in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Magna Carta Anniversary Marked with Death of Habeas Corpus Rights for Guantánamo Bay Prisoners

The London Guantánamo Campaign [1] regrets the decision of the American Supreme Court, on 11 June, to reject petitions from 7 Guantánamo Bay prisoners [2], held without charge or trial for over a decade, to challenge the basis of their detention. This comes in the same week as the 797th anniversary of the Magna Carta, on Friday 15 June, conferring the rights to a fair trial and habeas corpus [3], among others, for almost the past eight centuries. The court gave no reason for its decision to overturn this basic right it had earlier upheld.

Yesterday, 30 May, the Supreme Court handed down its 5-2 majority verdict finding against Julian Assange in his appeal against extradition to Sweden. However, the verdict was far from straightforward and an unprecedented re-opening of the appeal now looks possible. The solidarity vigil at the court was organised by Veterans for Peace UK, London Catholic Worker and other supporters.

The appalling massacre of 108 people, including 49 children, in Houla, Syria, dominated the Independent on Sunday’s latest front cover. Above a few short lines of commentary the banner headline read:

‘SYRIA: THE WORLD LOOKS THE OTHER WAY. WILL YOU?’

The text beneath observed:

‘There is, of course, supposed to be a ceasefire, which the brutal Assad regime simply ignores. And the international community? It just averts its gaze. Will you do the same? Or will the sickening fate of these innocent children make you very, very angry?’ (Independent on Sunday, May 27, 2012)
