CND and the inconsistencies of anti-unilateralists

21-02-2009 14:31 | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | Terror War | South Coast | World

I am in favour of unilateral nuclear disarmament. I’m not a peacenik, in that I don’t hold all violence to be inherently unjustifiable, but the very idea of nuclear war makes my mind boggle. That we, that is, the UK, retain a nuclear arsenal with the capacity to wipe out millions if not hundreds of millions of lives is effectively a crime against all humanity. I’ve met a few Labourite activists who believe we should keep our weapons, but I’ve never yet met one who is consistent about it.

The CIA Beyond Redemption and Should be Terminated

20-02-2009 18:05 | Analysis | Repression | Terror War | World

The Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) has confirmed the worst fears of its creator President Harry Truman that it might degenerate into “an American Gestapo.” It has been just that for so long it is beyond redemption. It represents 60 years of failure and fascism utterly at odds with the spirit of a democracy and needs to be closed, permanently.

Drones parked in our own backyard, to Bomb our own People

18-02-2009 22:05 | Smash EDO | Repression | Social Struggles | Terror War | World

In a shocking discovery reports have emerged from simply Google Earth images evidence of three drones parked on an airfield in some remote destination within Baluchistan, the images were captured by orbiting satellites and archived within Google Earth data warehouse to suddenly be discovered recently. Though there is no denying that during the Musharraf regime bases were rented out to the American army costing them a massive deficit to the tune of $10 Billion. But what probably irks the nation is that the Pakistani government have categorically denied that the Pakistani bases are being used to launch drones-

Who is a Terrorist?

18-02-2009 21:28 | Guantánamo | Analysis | Palestine | Terror War | Sheffield | World

There is a shrinking group of free people, people who believe in a context with everyone’s equal worth. This group still dreams about a society where everyone is included and for this, one is prepared to struggle.

The hours are not enough. Daddy Obama tries every night to give Natasha and Malia some of his time. The hours are not enough. That is just the way it is. Part of the job, the assignment. Much has been promised and every promise has to be kept.

Obama paints a picture of economic catastrophe

18-02-2009 19:51 | Analysis | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Addressing a national television audience in his first White House press conference, President Barack Obama, promoting his economic stimulus plan, used unprecedented language to characterize the deepening economic crisis. He described conditions of rapidly rising unemployment, growing demand at food banks, widespread foreclosures, the collapse of consumer spending and the failure of small businesses.
He declared that his administration "inherited the most profound economic emergency since the Great Depression," and warned that the lack of a federal government intervention "could turn a crisis into a catastrophe."

A suspect police stunt

16-02-2009 01:18 | Palestine | Repression | Terror War | World

The stunt, for it can only be described as such, of the police intercepting several vehicles on the M65 on their way to join the convoy, as a part of an operation under the much-abused anti-terror laws, was a clear and unprincipled attempt to discredit the convoy.

RIP Beverly Eckert, 9/11 Widow

14-02-2009 16:57 | History | Terror War | World

Beverly Eckert
Today brings the sad news that Beverly Eckert died in the crash of Flight 3407 on her way to Buffalo for a weekend celebration of what would have been her late husband Sean Rooney's 58th birthday. She had planned to take part in a presentation at Canisius High School of a scholarship award that she established in Sean Rooney's honor. Among the family members surviving her was her sister, Sue Borque, who told the Buffalo News that while the family had not yet received official confirmation of her sister's fate, the reality was settling in. "We know she was on that plane," Bourque said, "and now she's with [Sean]." Her husband of 34 years, Sean Rooney had been killed in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11th, 2001.

Israelis, in Crisis, Vote for a Government of War

14-02-2009 12:46 | Smash EDO | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Terror War | South Coast | World

Dust of Tuesday's voting battle settled down and the battle of forming the next Israeli government has just begun. With Benjamin Netanyahu poised for premiership and Avigdor Lieberman, leader of a “racist and fascist” party (as condemned by Talia Sasson of the Merez party) very well positioned to be the king or queen maker of the next ruling coalition, the Palestinian people and the whole region will have to brace as from next March for an Israeli government of war.

Torture, Rendition, Terror & Oil: A Primer on "Deep Politics"

13-02-2009 22:41 | Analysis | Energy Crisis | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Why is the Obama administration hell-bent on continuing rendition, and covering-up torture? Why are Western states complicit in these illegal activities? How can the systematic perpetuation of such criminal practices under the rubric of the 'War on Terror' be conducted by the very states who claim to be the guardians of 'international law' and 'human rights'?

Obama's "War on Terror"

12-02-2009 12:25 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War | World

The language is softened and deceptive. The strategy and tactics are not.
There are disturbing signs that business as usual is planned, more witch-hunt cases will follow, and "war on terror" efforts will persist for another four years. It's not change to believe in, in fact, none at all at a time the need is greater than ever.

His speech had been keenly anticipated by the assembled audience of 300 leading politicians and state officials, including 13 heads of government and state and 50 ministers. They were eager to hear of the new content of US foreign policy under President Barack Obama and evinced a desire for the revival of transatlantic collaboration.
