23rd November issue of Manchester Climate Fortnightly out

23-11-2008 21:29

Manchester Climate Fortnightly is a newsletter published by a small collective in Manchester, covering all subjects related to climate change in the Northwest of England (and a few places beyond...)
Below are some samples articles from the November 23rd issue. The rest of the newsletter, and previous editions, are available for download via the following link-
www.manchesterclimatefortnightly.info. You can also subscribe by emailing info [at] manchesterclimatefortnightly.info with "subscribe" in the header

We lead with the story that although Manchester City Council has stated it aims for Manchester to be Britain's greenest by 2010, it has actually slipped further down in the annual rankings of Forum for the Future (these rankings are under review, but a great leap forwards for our sunny city
would be a surprise...)

Our second story is on the “Climate Change Foundation”, a proposal that has so far received scant coverage in the mainstream press.

All the usual features are here too-
a Calendar bursting with events, including Sat 29th's Chomsky at 80, www.chomskyat80.org.uk
a Digest of local, national and global news (with more on the website)
Campaign updates “Read All About it” and other goodies.

How To Stop A Nuclear Waste Train. Impressions from Germany

08-11-2008 16:05

Good news: 20 000 police trying to prevent countless anti-nuclear waste activists from stopping the castor transport train weren´t able to stop them: a couple of activists managed to stop the train not far away from the french border by chaining themselves to the rails.

The following is a portrait of a very famous and traditional event within the anti-Castor activist's agenda: the forest „game“ called the „Ralley Monte Göhrde“.

Will the UK Face a Natural Gas Crisis this Winter?

30-10-2008 14:10

UK Natural Gas Supply and Demand Projection to 2015
In recent years, natural gas consumption in the United Kingdom has grown rapidly. At the same time, there has been an abrupt change in UK natural gas supplies, brought about by depletion and decline. In the first part of this two part series, I look at historical developments in EU and UK natural gas consumption, production and imports and the challenges posed by declining production.

In the second part of the series, I use a simulation approach to test the likely adequacy of natural gas supplies during the upcoming heating season. In these simulations, I use data from the UK Department of Business, Enterprise, and Regulatory Reform (BERR), UK National Grid, as well as information about recent UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) develpments. Based on what I refer to as the reference scenario, it seems likely that the UK will increasingly have to rely on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports to secure adequate supplies.

The Post-Oil Economy: After The Techno-Fix

23-12-2007 20:12

"Even when grappling with the idea of economic disintegration, Americans attempt to cast it in terms of technological or economic progress: eco-villages, sustainable development, energy efficiency and so on. Under the circumstances, such compulsive techno-optimism seems maladaptive." — Dmitry Orlov, "Our Village"

The Death Knell for Nuclear Power

08-12-2007 21:22

THE LEAN GUIDE TO NUCLEAR ENERGY - 1ST EDITION
David Fleming, creator of the concept of Tradeable Energy Quotas and author of the forthcoming and rather wonderful “Lean Logic”, has just published The Lean Guide to Nuclear Energy, which is a thorough demolition of the case for nuclear power being a solution to peak oil. and climate change. You can down load the pdf. for free here  http://www.theleaneconomyconnection.net/downloads.html#Nuclear or you can order printed copies here  http://www.theleaneconomyconnection.net/nuclear/buy.htm . Like much of David’s writing, it patiently yet assertively builds its arguments, backed up by exhaustive research, to build a case against nuclear power that looks pretty much bulletproof to me.
