Rough night for Birmingham occupiers

24-11-2011 16:18

At 23:30 as the occupiers were settling down for the night, university security began harassing the students. Simon Furse a second year International relations student said “It was disgraceful, I have never seen like it university security are just hired thugs who seem to enjoy violence and causing distress with no regard to the law. I was at the window that we use as an entrance to the occupation. The security guard tried to drag someone out of the window. We peacefully resisted and got the person inside at which point the security guard kept the window open and punched me three times in the face. The security then adopted a policy of open harassment ringing the doorbell for long periods of time, knocking on all the windows, pointing lights and cameras into the toilet and shouting insults and abuse.”

Today: Occupy London protest with Old Bailey Cleaners

24-11-2011 13:46

On Thursday 24th November at 4:30pm, there will be loud and colourful demonstration at the historic Old Bailey*, supported by the IWW and Occupy London. The people who clean the offices of the law firm, McGrigors, at the Old Bailey, are protesting against the illegal practices, bullying and the union-busting treatment they have received by Apollo Cleaning Services.

Apollo Cleaning Services was awarded the cleaning contract on 3rd October. Since then, they have bullied and harassed a pregnant cleaner – whom they told pregnancy was ‘irrelevant’ to her conditions of work. When she complained about the new disregard for health and safety practices her concerns were ignored.

Great Speech by Occupy Exeter Protester

24-11-2011 10:25

Video
A great speech from a woman at the Occupy Exeter camp, she sums up many of the injustices and wrong doings in the world. She explains why it is so important to have a say and that the old structures that we serve, such as the banks and our love of consuming could be dying out for a new way of thinking. Please feel free to share the video. I have posted the text to the film on here also, and a link below to where you can watch the film in high quality video.

Response to the University of Birmingham with regards to our Occupation: Reinven

24-11-2011 01:33

Earlier today we were told we are already facing disciplinary action and would have to pay the “substantial” cost of the university’s legal fees for an injunction they will take out against us if we do not leave by 9am tomorrow. The threat to the university and the system of public education is so grave that we are more afraid of the risks posed to society at large than our own immediate future. As such we have resolved to stay. We believe that students nationally must take action to defend education, despite the risks.

Tahrir Square on Monday night
We are in the midst of a decisive battle in the face of a potentially terminal crackdown. Over the past 72 hours the army has launched a ceaseless assault on revolutionaries in Tahrir Square and squares across Egypt. Over 2000 of us have been injured. More than 30 of us have been murdered. Just in Cairo alone. In the last 48 hours.

The 1%'s New Battle: Selling War on Iran

22-11-2011 19:38

In the face of all that presently ails America--stagnant economy, staggering income disparity, high chronic unemployment, mass demonstrations coast to coast--a remedy is desperately needed. For a ruling elite concerned only with maintaining power, only one solution can address these concerns and those that are forthcoming. Yep. It’s time for another war.

Occupy the Machine – Stop the 1%, Literally

21-11-2011 23:44

We invite you to imagine, as many of you already probably have, if thousands of people occupied local refineries, roads, ports, oil and mining extraction sites, etc. – in other words, imagine if people occupied the locations where the 1% destroy the land and exploit humans, all for profit.

We Are 0%

21-11-2011 19:14

The concept of 99% turned itself into the mass of tended-to-be-represented folks not different from former 100%-ers represented in “we are all humans” system - usually named as bourgeois democracy.

We are outside from 100% of statistics based paneconomism which is deeply racist at its core.

We’re against oppression by plutocratic 1%-ers or that established by manipulative majority.

We are unmanageable multitude of selforganised zeros.

Occupy Cardiff is Back! Get on down there.

I saw Clayton Blizzard doing his stuff at a pub in Bristol last night and was inspired to action.  http://claytonblizzard.com/. Economics 101 (The Natal Lottery) did it for me: "Change doesn't trickle down to us; it rises up like dust so stamp your feet!"

So I diverted a bit on my journey back up north and spent a few hours this afternoon at the new Occupy Cardiff site outside the Unite/PCS union offices, Transport House, 1 Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11.

The City of London: a cost / benefit analysis of the moral and economic cancer a

20-11-2011 18:27

Whilst not even having a positive impact on the UK economy, let alone society, the City of London places British people at the centre of an international network of tax havens which facilitates the harsh realities that the majority of people in this world have to live with everyday. Just as we banned slavery, we have another opportunity to change the world for the better right on our doorstep, we just have to take it.

Open Letter to a Chancellor (U$A)

20-11-2011 16:57

pig
Yo I'm reposting this great letter to a Chancellor at an American university from someone on her staff (or how much longer is an open question I suppose).
For all it's problems, at least the Occupy is bringing out the contradictions inherent in repression of peaceful protest .. and I guess that's good.

Occupy London ‘repossesses’ multi-million pound bank offices

18-11-2011 13:01

- First building for the economic justice campaigners as they occupy third space in borough of Hackney, alongside existing spaces in the City of London and borough of Islington
- New ‘Bank of Ideas’ open to public this Saturday. Offices and meeting rooms will be available for those that have lost their nurseries, community centres and youth clubs due to savage Government spending cuts

Occupy London has taken over a huge abandoned office block in the borough of Hackney belonging to the investment bank UBS in a move it describes as a ‘public repossession.’ [1]

Overnight on Thursday, a dozen activists from the Occupy London, campaigners for social and economic justice as part of the global fight for real democracy, gained access to the building and secured it, giving them a legal claim on the space.
