26-03-2012 18:29

Noone has summarised the past years' wave of uprisings, from Cairo to Wisconsin, better than Paul Mason in his latest book: 'Why It's Kicking off Everywhere: The New Global Revolutions'. Here are some reviews of the book:

Occupy Nottingham Press Release

15-03-2012 16:55

Court hearing now adjourned until 5th April

Occupy Nottingham received a phonecall yesterday informing them that their original request for a three week adjournment at the hearing Tuesday this week, had now been granted by the Judge.

The letter our solicitors sent to the courts prior to the hearing, was not given to the Judge by the court clerks, and furthermore the council's solicitor did not ensure the Judge had copies of all the relevant paperwork for the case. The Judge however showing a level of fairness and equality as had been requested, and giving time to secure funding for formal representation in court, upon reading the letter he granted the full three week adjournment.

This means that when our spokesperson drew the Judges attention to the letter submitted by Public Interest Lawyers at the hearing this Tuesday and reqested the adjournment on the grounds listed, that the Judge had no idea what was being referred to, and Occupy Nottingham won the original three day adjournment purely on the merit of the strength of the argument presented to the Judge by our spokesperson.

Members of the group also emphatically deny any allegations that they have cost the council thousands of pounds to clean the area around their camp as alleged. The only rubbish that we have collected has been inside our camp, and likewise the same for any spillages, which we have disposed of, or cleaned up ourselves as the council have refused to facilitate refuse collection. In fact we have seen considerable neglect when it came to cleaning the area around our camp perimeter by the council. Anything external to the camp is likely to have been left by other members of the public who are nothing to do with the camp, particularly night time revellers and drunks hanging about the market place.

Block The Bill Builders

14-03-2012 03:03

Action against the Coalition Government's planned Health and Social Care bill has so far largely been what ministers will have expected and planned for, since privatisation of the NHS was first mooted (long before the 2010 general election).
As a result, such action is being largely ignored by those who will vote, and indeed by the mainstream media.
We are calling for a Day of Action on Wednesday 14th March

Deconstructing the Attack against Occupy London

02-03-2012 14:07

In the evening of February 28, 2012, a double blind experiment was performed on the political power structure of Europe. Its purpose was to determine whether a specific spying attack was still ongoing after an apparent changing of chairs in the hierarchies, and its result is technically positive. The recent assault against Occupy London appears to be the grotesque response to the measurement.

Shockingly, business leaders campaign against 50p tax rate

01-03-2012 08:32

A group of people referring to themselves as 'wealth creators' are awfully upset about how they have been put 'in a very awkward position' as a result of the temporary 50p tax rate. Obviously this is the biggest injustice of all the changes made to combat the credit crunch. Go ahead, scrap the NHS and make people work despite being in comas. Just for the love of god don't make the richest in the country have to pay a little bit more! Do you think we're all in this together or something?!

Cornelius Castoriadis, Autonomy, and Occupy Movement

Occupation starts as camp ends

29-02-2012 13:37

Occupy Birmingham will be leaving the park behind Symphony Hall today. The occupiers have had a permanent presence in Birmingham City centre since October 15th, first in Victoria Square and latterly in the park on Cambridge Street. The camp is the longest occupation in England, it might be dismantling but this does not end the activities of Occupy, far from it. This is not the beginning of the end, but is the end of the beginning phase of Occupy.

Miserable Old Town of London

28-02-2012 15:31

Although there are tons of moans you can have about Occupy London, it's sure as hell depressing to see the bile, spite and joy people have been sticking up on blogs and media articles cheering on the eviction. Is it just London or also the rest of England that's become so servile, uncritical and miserable?

Purchasing Prisoners, Creating Criminals & How Occupy Could be Next

28-02-2012 06:31

Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), owner of the largest private prison system in the United States, recently sent a letter to 48 states offering up to $250 million to manage government-owned detention centers. The letter lists the criteria of eligible purchases, which include an assurance that state corrections agencies “have sufficient inmate population to maintain a minimum 90 percent occupancy over the term of the contract.”

This guarantee isn’t difficult to rationalize when considering it from CCA’s point of view. They are paid by the government for each prisoner they house, so they want to house as many prisoners as possible in order to maximize their revenue.

But what if there aren’t enough prisoners to fill CCA’s quota? Private prisons have faced this dilemma before, and they’ve responded by buying prisoners through legislation, government infiltration and old-fashioned bribery. And in the not too distant future, these conditions may mean that the mass arrests of Occupy protesters could become a windfall for investors.
