Burma: a view from within

04-10-2007 22:34 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Everyone likes surprises, and the brutal military regime that has ruled Burma since 1990 are no exception. Back in September 2005 people were dumbfounded to hear that the generals had moved the capital 400 miles to the north; almost two years later they woke up to find the cost of diesel – the country’s main fuel - had doubled, while that of gas – much used by private bus companies following orders from a greenwashing junta – increased by five times.

Hackers: Unite For Burmese Freedom!

One very effective way of removing power from a despotic regime is by taking over the tools of control. You can bring down the 'master' using the master's tools - you just have to be clever about it - and persistent.

Brown's Britain: 'Mother of Hypocrocies'

02-10-2007 21:02 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Repression | London | World

Brown
So Britain lectures Burma on the right of people to protest, the U.N., sends an envoy there and the U.S. - whilst behaving in Iraq and Afghanistan as Burma's Junta, shooting, beating, torturing, imprisoning without trial - go in to broken record mode about the right to peacefully demonstrate and 'freedom and democrocy'. Meanwhile, the British government, under the new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown (who as Chancellor of the Exchequer write the cheques for the Iraq and Afghanistan bloodbaths) has instructed the police to ban a peaceful march and Lobby of Parliament - on 8th October, the day that Parliament re-convenes after the summer break - demanding that British troops leave Iraq and Afghanistan.

01-10-2007 23:54 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War | World

We bring to the attention of our readers this carefully researched analysis.

"Given the warnings of incipient terrorist attacks that had been repeatedly received by the Administration and the FBI, why would anyone coordinate two major annual air training exercises at this time, and divert key resources to the North Pole on an outdated mission? Who was in a position to do this?"

Getting Lost In Translation: Ahmadinejad And The Media

30-09-2007 12:26 | Anti-racism | Gender | Repression | World

Obviously Ahmadinejad was not saying "We don’t have any homosexuals whatsoever in Iran" —something nobody in the world would believe, not even in Iran. And by implication, he was not telling his audience, I am a plain liar! —something which his audience at Columbia and the American media construed him to be saying.

Is the "Gay Executions in Iran" story being ginned up for political purposes?

29-09-2007 21:06 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Repression | World

There's been a lot of talk about Ahmadinejad's statement about how Iran supposedly "doesn't have gays like you do" - which of course totally distracts from the substance of his speech in which he proclaimed that Iran was not going to attack anyone and that he didn't deny the holocaust as claimed but only questioned why the Palestinians had to suffer for it.
