The president of the Committee Against Torture requests more guarantees from Madrid

The new President of the U.N Committee against Torture, the Spanish professor Fernando Mariño Menéndez, declared that the Spanish State ought to accept the recommendations put together by the U.N Special Secretary for the eradication of the ill-treatment of detainees. Mariño, who was elected to the position on May 3rd, in comments to France Press, stated that Spanish Authorities ought to ‘limit' the holding of detainees incommunicado, interrogations should be recorded, medical checks should be rigorous, the detainee should be visited by a doctor of confidence and “humanitarian criteria should prevail” in prison policy.

On 1 June, 2004, Ludd, a For Mother Earth Scotland activist handed himself in to the police. A hearing was anticipated on 2 June, 1994. He is spending this time in jail for refusing to pay a £550 fine, imposed on him for opposing Government’s Weapons of Mass Destruction. He was charged only with of a breach of the peace. He was immediately taken to jail for 28 days on an extract warrant.

Torture, America's New World Order

The pictures of tortures that hit the news, as bad as they are, do not reflect the depth and extent of the crimes perpetrated against the Iraqi prisoners. Rumsfeld himself admitted that. Torture against Iraqi detainees should simply be viewed as a continuation of the destruction of Iraqi society, murders, and crimes against Iraqi people. These pictures are not any worse than the pictures that show children’s body parts blown apart. What sets these pictures apart from other scenes of brutality is that they reveal to us a purposeful brutality being perpetrated by US functionaries. If murder of innocent civilians during the war and military confrontations can be portrayed as an accident, the torture of prisoners cannot.
