John Pilger's on the War on WikiLeaks and his Interview with Julian Assange

15-01-2011 10:51 | Analysis | Other Press | Repression | Sheffield | World

The attacks on WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange, are a response to an information revolution that threatens old power orders in politics and journalism. The incitement to murder trumpeted by public figures in the United States, together with attempts by the Obama administration to corrupt the law and send Assange to a hell-hole prison for the rest of his life, are the reactions of a rapacious system exposed as never before.

"Indignez-vous!" 600,000 sold, shaking France &world (Translation here) Hessel

15-01-2011 05:48 | Globalisation | Repression | Social Struggles | Birmingham | World

Coming to US, should be $4 or $5.
Perhaps the timing of the book, released during troubled times of economic crisis and inequality has rung a bell for the people of France. Maybe it’s the fact that the author is a holocaust survivor almost a century old -- former spy, escapee from a concentration camp, then Resistance fighter for the rest of WWII -- which lends credibility to his message. Maybe it's the poetic prose. Whatever the reason, Indignez Vous! by Stéphane Hessel is the #1 bestselling book on Amazon.fr, and has been for some time. The book has sold over 600,000 in just three months.

Britain's war on Islam

14-01-2011 21:23 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Repression | Sheffield | World

Daily Mail, 28 December 2010
Western vilification of Islam is longstanding, cruel, and unjustifiable. Notably post-911, they've viciously targeted Muslims for political advantage. Throughout America, continental Europe and Britain it rages, harming innocent men and women. With no regard for democratic values and justice, they're bogusly charged and imprisoned for crimes they neither planned or committed. Yet supportive media reports convict by accusation, the public unaware that supposed threats were lies, yet it repeats endlessly.

Protesters Tell New York Business to Stop Providing Israel’s Lethal Tear Gas

14-01-2011 04:29 | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Repression | World

New York, NY, January 11 – Thirty-five protesters gathered during the lunch hour today outside the midtown Manhattan offices of Point Lookout Capital Partners, a New York firm that facilitates investment in Combined Systems Inc. (CSI). CSI, based in Pennsylvania, sells tear gas to the Israeli army that the Israeli army has then used to kill and seriously injure a number of unarmed protesters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, including on January 1, 36-year-old Jawaher Abu Rahmah from the village of Bil’in.

Dave Lippman from Adalah-NY explained, “The Israeli military is using tear gas manufactured by CSI and financed through Point Lookout Capital as a weapon to crush the growing unarmed protest movement against Israel’s illegal confiscation of Palestinian land for Israeli settlements. We as US taxpayers are paying for some of the tear gas that Israel is shooting at Palestinian, Israeli and American protesters. The US government needs to stop providing this deadly aid, and CSI and Point Lookout need to end their complicity in Israel’s violent repression of legitimate protest.”

Officer A

13-01-2011 09:32 | History | Repression | Sheffield | World

Last night's guardian article about another undercover officer below - sorry to repost but this seems like useful information to me. So are we keeping to the guardian's 'gentlemen's agreement' with the police not to be open about who this officer A is? Is it just for those that 'need to know'? Please just post her name and face someone.

I don't believe too much in the efficacy of the kind of write-in protest advocated below, but an international spotlight on this case just might have an effect on
the final sentencing of these exemplary militants. So if you are on any listservs, please post. Thanks

ENTSICHERN CONGRESS in Berlin, 29-30 January 2011

Analyse, criticise, dismantle EU!

A considerable part of all legislative and political decisions are currently made via the European Union. Expected resistance in the 27 member states is thwarted by this ”policy laundering” while the financially strongest governments furthermore dominate the course. At the same time the EU enlarge its powers through its own structures which coordinate cross-border activities as well as advance projects under its own direction.

This policy is especially noticeable in the area of European ”homeland defence” and its securitization, militarisation and gendarmerisation of social phenomenons. There is, however, no increased attention which accompanies the development of the EU by now, for example by the social movements. The radical Left, as well, which is normally never short of criticism of the state, remains speechless.

I can't forgive Mark Kennedy's betrayal of activists

11-01-2011 14:37 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Repression | Sheffield | World

Along with many others, I was sickened when I discovered that the man I knew as a fellow activist, Mark Kennedy, was in fact an undercover police officer who had been spying on us since 2003. Yet my feelings were nothing compared with those who were close to him. The betrayal and loss they are feeling is a real grief – the equivalent of someone you love dying. I went through this myself a few years ago when one of my best friends, Martin Hogbin, was exposed as a BAE spy. I denied the facts for a long time simply because the truth was too difficult. I still miss my friend, miss the good times, miss him seeing my son grow up; I don't think this feeling will ever go away.

Are the food riots spreading across north africa being caused by commodity specu

10-01-2011 22:47 | Globalisation | Public sector cuts | Repression | World

it’s not like it hasn’t happened before. financial speculators buy up food commodities, hoping prices will rise. if prices do rise, there is no incentive to sell. the longer demand is greater than supply, prices will rise. eventually, someone will sell, and prices will stabilize...

...if you weren’t paying attention in those days, there were food riots all over the world. the rioting sparked revolutions which topples at least three governments.

this was originally written this from an american perspective, but it’s clear that the peole who casually toss people’s lives away don’t just hate people in one country or another, they seem to hate human beings in general.

and this post didn’t even bring up the pointless wars, the resource extraction industries, trigger-happy cops and ideologies of hate…this world isn’t going to hell, it’s become hell.
