I was fairly certain that one of us would be shot today.

05-02-2009 11:53 | Palestine | Repression | Social Struggles | World

This morning (Tuesday 3rd February, 2009), farmers from Abassan Jadiida (New Abassan), to the east of Khan Younis , the southern region, returned to land they’d been forced off of during and following the war on Gaza. The continual shooting at them by Israeli soldiers while they work the land intensified post-war on Gaza. The Israeli soldiers’ shooting was not a new thing, but a resumption of the policy of harassment that Palestinians in the border areas have been enduring for years, a harassment extending to invasions in which agricultural land, chicken farms, and the houses in the region have been targeted, destroyed in many cases.

Gaza New Siege Mechanism

04-02-2009 22:26 | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Repression | World

It is patently clear that to Tel Aviv, Washington and Brussels the assertion of PA rule over Gaza is the strongest argument for holding off reconstruction as a Damocles sword over Gaza, and for the occupying power this condition is its strongest "guarantee" for sustaining its grip on that sword. The fear now is that Israel and the international powers that have helped it to perpetuate its occupation since 1967 will use a Palestinian façade buttressed by official Arab support to stage a repeat in Gaza of the Iraq experience in the wake of the 1991 war when reconstruction and development were perpetually deferred in order to further weaken the country preparatory to toppling the regime through the invasion that took place in 2003.

US Sold Phosphorus Shells to Israel

04-02-2009 22:06 | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Repression | South Coast | World

The Pine Bluff Arsenal, a United States Army installation in Arkansas, specializes in chemical and biological weapons. The military touts them as the only facility in the Northern Hemisphere which fills white phosphorus munitions. That's the important point here, as it once again ties the US military directly into the Israeli war.

President Obama, Don't Become Complicit in Their Crimes!

01-02-2009 21:01 | Analysis | Repression | Terror War | World

On Thursday, January 29th, I sent President Obama this message:

"Mr. President: The Bush Administration lied to the people in pursuit of war. As a result, at least one million Iraqis and thousands of U.S. soldiers are dead. Thousands more are maimed. The stature of the U.S. is severely damaged. The U.S. Constitution is in shreds after signing statements, wiretaps, and torture. Your obligation is to investigate and bring to justice those who violated U.S. and international law, such as the torture treaty. Failure to do so makes you complicit in their crimes."

Colin Roach, aged 21 years, died in January 1983 after receiving a fatal gunshot wound in 1983 while in the custody of Stoke Newington police station, London. As part of the Day of Action against Bayer, we protested in front of their building. Workers and neighbor companies were informed about what Bayer is related to if they are customers of HLS, a shameful crime against innocent animals in the name of profit. As usual, people were shocked to see those terrible pictures in the placards.

The horrors of Israel's peace

31-01-2009 10:19 | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Repression | World

What can we conclude from Israel's unilateral offer of a ceasefire? Under what conditions will it resume its brutal destruction of the Palestinian population? The terms that the Palestinians must accept, according to Israel, if they wish to avoid another brutal round of destruction are these: to remain silent under conditions of occupation; and to resist the impulse to resist the occupation.

Guantánamo - Obama could do better

31-01-2009 00:17 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War | World

Obama has yet to make any commitment to dismantle the key components of George Bush's attack on human rights

Scottish-based human rights group Scotland Against Criminalising Communities and the Scotland Stop the War Coalition are giving a cautious welcome to orders signed by President Obama today to close Guantánamo Bay and to put an end to some of the harshest interrogation techniques. But we are dismayed that Obama has so far made no commitment to permanently abandon trial by the notorious Military Commissions and that his comments during the signing ceremony indicate that some Guantanamo prisoners may continue to be held indefinitely without trial. We think Obama could do better. He needs to be a great deal firmer in dealing with the legacy that George Bush has left him.
