Wall Street drools over prospect of capturing Iraq oil wealth

06-03-2007 09:17

“Anyone Can Go To Baghdad; Real Men Go To Tehran”

04-03-2007 23:26

“What does state mean?” asked Antonio Gramsci, the Italian political theorist. “Is it just the state apparatus -- or the whole of organized civil society?” In fact, he argued, State “is the dialectical unity between government power and civil society.” The liberal democratic state relies on civil society’s consent for its legitimacy. It therefore has to allow a sphere of non-interference in which ideas circulate and worldviews take shape. The endorsement that comes out of this seemingly free exchange of ideas gives legitimacy to the existing political order. Far from being passive observers, the ruling elite, through their control of mass media, ensures that their preferred worldview remains dominant.

Israel and the Duty to Obey Conscience

04-03-2007 23:10

The Anglo-Irish politician and philosopher Edmund Burke is frequently cited as the source for the quotation: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” However, this quotation is probably apocryphal. [1] The general sentiment, though, is fine when viewed in reverse paraphrase: that goodness reigns by struggling against evil.

Interview with a war resister

03-03-2007 21:55

Darrell Anderson received a purple heart after being wounded in Iraq, and has since been one of the wars harshest critics. He currently lives in Portland Oregon and continues to speak out against US war crimes committed in IraqQ: What led you to join the military?

A: Basically, I wanted money for education. I wanted a future. At the time I joined, it was a month before the war had started. So, I was ready to go to war, and I had actually joined because I wanted to see combat and wanted to go to war. I believed that If I died for my country, I’d be a hero, and I believed all the propaganda that they feed the youth of the country about war.

Q: How did you and your fellow soldiers react to President Bush’s announcement of war with Iraq?

US commanders admit: we face a Vietnam-style collapse in Iraq

03-03-2007 14:47

Define "win." Winning cannot be finding Saddam's WMDs; he had none. Winning cannot be punishing Iraq for 9-11; they had nothing to do with it. Winning cannot be punishing Iraq for aiding Al Qaeda; they weren't. Winning can't be defined as liberating the Iraqis. They're trying to do this themselves, but we won't let them. Define "win".

Why hasn't Bliar been run out of town on a rail? Doing nothing will only embolden his kind.

racist empire revivalist Blair has key British 'left' doing his propaganda

01-03-2007 21:21

An interesting spectacle is occurring in Britain, with the very successful careerist as the authorised [by the state] left socialist platform grabber Viscount Stansgate [Oops! Tony Benn, how very populist sounding!] providing reliable guidance and protection for his successors Ken Livingstone and George Galloway as they find their spots as the next generation of elder statesmen doing the sales pitches for UK PLC. So close is Benn to Livingstone and Galloway that any visitor even from across the channel will be shocked to be told that these are persons of the left. They are very very happily doing the job for British military and racist propaganda that Blair could not dream of doing himself.

The Bush administration’s new strategy of setting the Middle East aflame

28-02-2007 13:08

A lengthy article in this week’s New Yorker magazine by veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh provides further evidence that the Bush administration has not only set course for war against Iran, but has over the past few months embarked on a reckless and incendiary strategy that has the potential to unleash sectarian Sunni-Shia conflicts throughout the Middle East.

London antiwar demonstration downplays threat of war against Iran

27-02-2007 12:48

In 2003, one million people took to the streets of London to protest against the war in Iraq. Four years later, amidst Bush’s “surge” in Iraq and the advanced preparations for a military assault on Iran, the capital saw somewhat less than 30,000 march on Saturday under the slogan, “No Trident—Troops out of Iraq.”
