BMW Workers Self-Organising Against Bosses and Sellout Union

At 6 am this morning there was a small picket in response to the lay off of 850 agency workers, outside two gates of BMW's mini car plant in Cowley, Oxford. 850 workers at the Cowley BMW plant were told they were being sacked immediately on arrival Monday 16 2 09 morning. The angry workers have pelted managers with fruit and accused union leaders of doing nothing.

Police bail sysadmin in animal rights extremism probe

This is a response to a particularly bad Foreign Affairs article in which Collier, author of The Bottom Billion, suggests that what we need to combat hunger is to throw the peasant off the land, bring machinery to bear on agriculture, and plant GM crops.

It is, as Aal et al note, a full-speed backward vision of agriculture, filled with wild fantasies of infinite production and zero environmental or social consequences. Frankly, it's a Stalinist vision, one that owes more to the dreams and delusions of the 1950s than anything else. Peace women defeat Ministry of Defence in freedom to protest case

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) byelaw banning camping outside the Atomic Weapons Establishment Aldermaston was quashed by the court of appeal today. The case, heard on 26th November 2008, was an appeal in the Judicial Review of the Secretary of State for Defence's decision to introduce byelaws which would have criminalised camping as a form of peaceful protest.

Gaza Vigil photos

A record number of people gathered in Cornmarket St Oxford on Thursday evening, January 8, to protest against the ongoing Israeli attack on Gaza. All sections of the community were represented and people stood in the cold for two hours with banners, placards and candles, some waving Palestinian flags.
