Near-nuclear disaster at Atomic Weapons Establishment

It was revealed this week that last July, the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) site at Burghfield in Berkshire was so severely flooded that it came within 2 to 3 hours of a criticality, in which there was a risk of a plutonium cloud being released that would potentially have affected millions. In addition, alarm systems failed for ten days. Read more >>

Join the Big Blockade of Britain’s Nuclear Bomb Factory! - Monday 27 October

Faslane Big Blockade - Oct '07 (C. Gwyntopher)
On October 27, anti-nuclear campaigners will blockade the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Aldermaston, near Reading, aiming to send a strong signal to the British government that the public continues to oppose the development of a new generation of nuclear weapons. The Aldermaston Big Blockade, organised by Trident Ploughshares and supported by CND, Block the Builders and the Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp is intended to peacefully disrupt the ongoing work at AWE on Trident nuclear warheads and their successors. We intend it to be a colourful, empowering and fun occasion, with arrest optional! Read more >>

Join the Big Blockade of Britain's nuclear bomb factory on October 27

In 2006/7, Faslane 365 saw well over 1000 arrests during a year-long blockade of the Trident submarine base in Scotland. Last Easter, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Aldermaston saw its biggest demonstration in two decades as 5000 people surrounded the base to mark the 50th anniversary of the first London to Aldermaston march. Trident Ploughshares now invites you to a major blockade of the Berkshire nuke factory, where billions of pounds are currently being spent developing new warhead facilities that will scupper nuclear disarmament for another 50 years. Help us uphold international law by blockading this factory of death in what promises to be a colourful celebration of life and people power. There is a role for everyone, arrestable or non-arrestable, young or old. This event is supported by CND, Block the Builders and the Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp. Read more >>

Congrats Bush & Brown: you've restarted the Cold War

With the USA signing deals left, right and centre with the UK, Czech Republic and Poland to site elements of its "Nuclear Missile Defence Shield" - or Son of Star Wars programme - in those respective countries; with the British parliament voting last year to replace its submarine-based Trident nuclear weapons system; and with recent US and NATO support for Georgia and the Ukraine, it should come as little surprise that Russia has announced plans to upgrade its own nuclear weapons systems, putting even more strain on the now beleaguered Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Hence, Bush, Cheney, Brown, Blair et al have managed to restart the Cold War. Well done, gentlemen. Read more >>
