Census resistance update: including court dates

18 months after the 2011 Census, court cases are dragging on against a tiny proportion of those who resisted the Census on anti-war and privacy grounds, mainly but not entirely because of Census data processing contracts with Lockheed Martin (England and Wales) and CACI (Scotland). For background and other reports on this, see the Indymedia census topic, Count Me Out and Ethical Census.

Call to boycott Sainsbury's in Oxford

I just went to the local branch of B&Q at Temple Cowley to get a couple of things and have discovered that it is closing down, due to close on the 1st September. This is because the owner of the land the store sits on apparently wished to double the rent. A new Sainsbury's supermarket is to be located on the site, and the City Council have not used their powers to intervene. Is another Sainbury's supermarket really what we need? Read more >>

Tar Free Oxford Takes Off

Tar Free Towns [  http://tarfreetowns.org/what-is-a-tar-free-town/ ] is an idea we had a little while ago, which originated from the desire to connect people in the UK with communities fighting tar sands in Canada, by supporting and encouraging hubs of tar sands activism to flourish in the UK. Torch relay dissent in Oxford

On the way there, Cowley Rd temporarily taken over by Coke signs...
This evening a handful of people decided at short notice to do a demo at the Olympic Torch relay... and one of us ended up occupying a traffic light post right in the middle of the route. The lesson: it's possible to do much more than you might think! Read more >>

Recent humiliation of Rajapaksa brings out new info dating to Dec 2010

James Kingston and Mahinda Rajapaksa
In faraway Sri Lanka, which is never faraway for the political manipulations through the Oxford University using the Oxford Union, amidst contradictory accounts, an email from James Kingston, then president of the Oxford Union dating back to sometime after december 2010 is revealed.
Despite credible allegations that the PR outfit Bell Pottinger organised the whole event, James Kingston comes up with a different version and stands 'by my invitation to the President, and had looked forward to his speech with great excitement'. James Kingston also seems to assert that no one else holds power in the Oxford Union while claiming ownership for the decision to pull the plug on the 'largest demonstration seen in the history of Oxford' Read more >>

Keep Gloucestershire's NHS Public Rallies Sat 16th June: Save Our NHS!

The Keep Gloucestershire's NHS Public campaign hit the headlines earlier this year when a legal challange by 76 year old Michael Lloyd, supported by Gloucestershire anti-cuts groups, forced local NHS bosses to stop plans to take community health services out of the NHS and hand them over to a 'community interest company'.
The battle to keep these services out of the hands of private sector health multinationals is not over, however, and co-ordinated county-wide protest rallies are taking place in Gloucestershire on Saturday June 16th. Read more >>
