This is What Democracy Looks Like! : The Fight For The Can Vies Social Centre

n May Barcelona was shook by four days of rioting and protest against the eviction of an established social centre, Can Vies.

Juana Belén Gutiérrez de Mendoza looks at the history of the building, and interviews the organisers currently fighting its eviction.

Self organised social centre (Centre social autogestionat) Can Vies has been a space for radical politics and community organising for 17 years. It’s been a place where different generations of activists can meet and learn from each other, where hundreds of people have learnt to be a part of a community, participating in the assembly with consensus decision making and collective responsibility. Newsflash: Labour Doesn’t Care About You

The Class War continues
It turns out the Left can move people – just not very far or in very interesting directions.

Seeing as how these things are usually rained out or freezing, The People’s Assembly at least managed to pick a nice enough day for their “No More Austerity: Demand the Alternative” march on Saturday (June 21st).

It’s a shame they couldn’t also have picked a more inspiring message – begging the government to stop the public service cuts they’re ideologically committed to and demanding a new Labour government as the only ‘alternative’ they can imagine. Hardly an Earth shatteringly radical call to arms for the poor and oppressed. But they do have Russell Brand, so that’s something. Read more >>

Hillsborough – Claims that Metropolitan Police Spied on Campaigners

Relatives of Liverpool fans killed in the Hillsborough disaster have called on the Metropolitan Police to answer claims officers spied on them. The call comes after Private Eye magazine had a freedom of information (FOI) request turned down by the Met. The Met has yet to comment, but reportedly turned down the FOI request to "safeguard national security". Read more >>

The film industry is the way?

Dilma Rousseff studies the case under the new Brazilian industrial policy.
Produced at millions of copies, costing pennies each, distributed throughout the country by the Brazilian Film Company and commercialized by legions of heroic fighters of the streets called Street Vendors, these copies are the biggest deterrent to piracy, will enhance the income and dignity of this micro-marketers, will take the national cinema to innumerable Brazilians and to other people, and, sold at popular prices, will make billionaire the Brazilian Film Industry and turn it in a sector able to fulfill its strategic role of consolidating a democratic and plural national identity and of compromising our population with a well-argued and well-supported national project.

EDL Numpties Achieve Nothing In Manchester - #edl #nwi @slatedl @misslbuttercup

The EDL got absolutely nothing from today's visit to Manchester, leaving its braindead devotees so absolutely bored shitless, afterwards came a mad dash to jump naked into the canal at Canal Street (possibly wandering where the EDL's Gay Division had vanised to). After the usual run-of-the-mill speeches, anti-fascists will be pleased to know nothing has changed, Tommy, Kev and Hel still in-charge of the EDL, and not the French Revolution-like leadership change that many members had prayed incessantly to Nutzi Norse God "Odin" for. EDL Support Hardcore Anti-Semites in Manchester This Saturday #edl #nwi @slatedl

Since their inception in 2008, the EDL have repeated in parrot fashion the mantra that they are peacefully opposing Islamic extremism by taking to the streets. Formed after poppies were burnt in Luton, this far right group argued every day for a considerable time that they were not racist. Furthermore, setting up supposed Gay and Jewish Divisions, they appeared on radio, TV and the newspapers telling the world that they hated antisemitism and homophobia, and yet, few people believed them.
