Atomic Weapons Establishment a catastrophe waiting to happen

The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) and the Ministry of Defence have submitted a planning application for a new nuclear warhead component factory at the Burghfield site in Berkshire, yet the site has been struggling to remedy as many as 1,000 safety defects uncovered by the government's official nuclear watchdog. And it has only been allowed to remain open because the Ministry of Defence says the work it does is vital.

14 September 2007, Manila, Philippines. – A crowd of more than 300 workers, farmers, fishers, and environmentalists from the Magkaisa Junk JPEPA Coalition (MJJC) today called on the Senators of the 14th Congress to look beyond the rosy projections and government hype surrounding the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA), and to carefully assess its short-term and long-term implications. This Was Forever, a film about the Allotments in the Olympic Games pathway.

On September 23, Manor Garden Allotments will be bulldozed to make way for a pathway for the Olympic Games in 2012. The site in Hackney Wick, next to the River Lee, has been there for 100 years and was originally bequeathed as a gift to local people to grow their own food. The local community is now scattered and has lost a great resource. Over the past year, film maker Mark Aitken and a group of teenagers have produced a film in tribute to the plot-holders and this special place. Read more >>
