Squatting in the media, a squatter responds

On Monday 2nd June, inaccurate and prejudicial articles about squatting appeared in the Hate Mail and the Torygraph, then not to be out done, the Daily Star. All were regurgitating some bullshit statement from the conservative party made by Eric Pickles (a particularly nasty right-wing pro-hunt homophobic toad from Essex). So clearly lacking any genuine research or analysis and so blatant in their anti squatter bias, I felt compelled to complain... Read more >>

Why are the police using surveillance on journalists?

Police should stop routine surveillance of reporters and photographers covering demonstrations in London, the National Union of Journalists has told Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.
NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear made the call in a letter to Smith after receiving complaints that journalists, particularly photographers, were facing what amounted to harassment by members of the Metropolitan Police Forward Intelligence Team (FIT). Read more >>

Governance and the Institution of the Common - Seminar. 5 June, London

The Art of Rent is a cycle of 4 meetings that started in January at Queen Mary University of London. This series of public seminars was open to everyone: our experiment with the academic structures to build a sort of open university. Open to London, to everybody who live here or pass through this metropolis. We tried to take the word "metroversity" literally and experiment a metropolitan space inside the university's space itself. Read more >>

Southfields Get Total Oil Out of Burma Protest

Southfields Total Sation
Six protesters demonstrated at the Southfields Total Station, 262 Wimbledon Park Road on 21st May 2008. They were protesting against the French oil and gas giant's 500 million dollar a year funding for the brutal military regime in Burma. The money just goes to the evil junta not the poor people of Burma. The regime has allocated just 5 million dollars to cyclone relief, whilst it earned 2 billion dollars in gas exports in 2007. Pro Life loonies defeated both inside and outside of Parliament.

Up to 1,000 on the Pro Choice demo.
On Tuesday an attempt to highjack the embryology bill going through Parliament was soundly defeated. Britain’s small but determined Pro Life movement had attached a number of amendments to the bill which included reducing the maximum time allowed for an abortion by half and also denying lesbian couples the right to IVF treatment. In the end every amendment was defeated and the pro lifers also had to suffer the humiliation of having their demo placed next to the pro choice contingent who outnumbered them by about 10-1.
