Budget protest: Nottingham

23-06-2010 21:59 | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | Nottinghamshire

Video
On Tuesday June 22nd, ConDem Chancellor George Osborne revealed the contents of the "emergency budget." As expected, this included a pay freeze for public sector workers (except the lowest paid) along with cuts in housing benefit and an increase in VAT.

The SWP-initiated Right to Work campaign called for protests across the country against the budget. These were supported by Unison and, locally, by the Nottinghamshire and Mansfield Trades Council. Trade unionists and others demonstrated outside the Council House from 5.30pm. I understand there were also protests by the PCS (the civil service union) at lunchtime.

This year, organisers of Nottingham Mayday have faced the full force of Notttingham City Council’s bureaucratic machinery, and had to jump through any number of legal and financial hoops. Nottingham Free School's May Day Discussion

30-04-2010 09:39 | Mayday 2010 | Education | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | Nottinghamshire

With Mayday coming soon the Nottingham Free School decided to arrange an open discussion on some of the issues surrounding the day. This discussion took place at the Sumac last Sunday night and is scheduled to be the first in a series which will take place on the final Sunday of each month. The hope is to create a regular space in which we can learn collectively and share our ideas and understandings of issues which strike us to have a particular relevancy. On Sunday we hoped to discuss the nature of class struggle today, as well as the different forms that resistance to capitalism can take, and this was in many ways a success.

Notts County Unison: Interview

24-03-2010 19:41 | Workers' Movements | Nottinghamshire

In October last year, Notts County Council announced a series of changes to the terms and conditions of staff. These were very controversial and preceded the announcement of the details of the council's budget which was widely unpopular.

On Friday March 19, Notts County Unison announced the results of a ballot for industrial action short of strike against the changes. I interviewed branch organiser Mike Scott to try and understand the background to the action and what's proposed.
