Indymedia - growing pains or symptoms of decay

Over the last couple of weeks a battle has been raging and opening fissures that threaten to drive apart the United Kollectives of Indymedia on this island. Unless you subscribe to the Sheffield IMC mailing list you are likely to be unaware about the arguments over claims of lack of communication, transparency and the existence of hidden hierarchies within the network.

Genoa G8 Diaz Raid - Trial May be Cancelled by Berlusconi Law Change

Amazing as it may seem, the court trial in Italy over the brutal police raid on the Diaz school during the 2001 Genoa G8 protests, may be effectively cancelled.

The enquiry and trial of police accused of committing brutal acts is due to start this week, on Friday 14th October. Yet due to a new law currently going through the Italian parliament it may never conclude, meaning that no one will be punished.

Our media - another approach

Over the last five years the indymedia open publishing concept has exploded throughout the internet, not just in the form of new indymedia collectives (of which there are now over 160) but also in the creation of many other non-affiliated 'citizen media' sites.

The model has been adopted in different forms and evolved along with new communications technologies such as RSS feeds which transformed the personal journals of the Blogging world into a global syndication network for content producers of every sort.

Indymedia however remains mostly uneffected, or does it?

"Tunisians Conduct Online Protest"

Amnesty International censors secret pro-war policy

may oppose war and may also recommend that war be used under the pretext of protecting human rights. A leaked version of this document on IMC Poland has been deleted (not just hidden) following a request by Amnesty International Poland.

At the meeting plans will be discussed to hold a big open day/ evening late October with workshops, meetings, film showings, food and a benefit party. If anyone is interested in helping out, please come along !

Assembly Member's petition to "Condemn Terrorism"

Richard Barnes, a Member of the Metropolitan Police Authority and London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon has set up an online petition condemning "terrorism and extremism", in addition to calling on ISPs to "block or remove websites that promote or encourage terrorist acts".
