brian haw violently assaulted then arrested at downing street today

a bloody-faced and frightened brian haw (minus hat)
during the freedom to protest assembly this afternoon, brian haw (who was peacefully filming events in whitehall) was violently attacked by a territorial support group policeman who lashed out at him, smashing his camera into his face and causing a deep cut. police then arrested brian for an unspecified public order offence and further assaulted him in a police van. a petition was delivered this morning to 10 downing street by an assortment of cross-party mps, a peer, a turner prize artist, a comedian, and several other activists. in the run-up to the end of the government's 'consultation' on 'managing protest near parliament', the petition calls for a repeal of the 'socpa' law that has criminalised so many peaceful protests, and a call for no further police powers over protest. We Own The Streets - Freedom of Assembly day of action 12th January

At a public meeting on the 2nd December, we collectively decided it was time for a campaign for the freedom to assemble in the UK. This was in response to continued police repression and the Government's consultation 'Managing Protest around Parliament', which proposes giving the police powers to censor the content of banners and placards, and that the laws about restrictions and notifications which currently apply to marches should be extended to static demonstrations. This is what has already happened in the 'SOCPA zone' around Parliament. Read more >>
