Local MP George Galloway makes rash comment on BBC News 24!

24-01-2007 05:48

The only thing that the world at large has been made aware of about the contribution to politics made by George Galloway is his widely reported stand on Iraq. The second thing, internationally, is that he has almost without exception been described as being not only biased in favour of Muslims but as being excessively biased in favour of Muslims. How valid is that perception as based and tested on the evidence of Galloway’s conduct and comments?

Reality shows - racism transcends class

23-01-2007 03:08

There have been too many people here starting new threads on the subject of C4 reality shows already. Worse than that though there have been too many middle-class people stating racism is a predominantly working-class problem. So I hope they can now explain 18 year old public schoolgirl Lucy Buchanan's racist tirade on 'Shipwrecked'.

During a train ride from Frankfurt to Düsseldorf on the 7th of January 2007, he was arrested by policemen near Gießen and brought to the JVA Gießen. He was told that his asylum proceeding was decided negatively and that he would be deported. On January 15th Ergin Celik went on hunger strike to protest against his deprvation of liberty and against the intention of the German authorities to deliver him to Turkey.

Dear Ms. Malone (UK Sunday Mirror): DENIAL is not just a river in Egypt -- re BB

22-01-2007 11:41

[Indymedia editors, please retain this format-corrected copy.]

The fact that a presumably a formally educated, univerisity degreed, person like Sunday Mirror columnist Carole Malone would deny that Jade Goody's, of Big Brother TV show, tirades against Shilpa Shetty were racist (and why can't Goody's behavior not be judged as nasty and bullying *and* racist), is even more telling about many white Britons than that Goody herself would deny it.

Shilpa Shetty: When Racism Isn’t Racism

19-01-2007 09:34

The row in Britain, and now in India, over the racist behaviour directed towards Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty during the celebrity game show "Big Brother" raises several questions, beyond this specific case, about the notion of racism itself. What has been highlighted is a widespread and persistent failure to come to terms with the meaning and nature of racism and what constitutes racist behaviour. The current debate therefore provides an opportunity to discuss an issue that has escaped widespread, serious consideration for far too long.

You Have to Learn English.. But Sorry, You Can't!

19-01-2007 08:43

Earlier this week, a campaign was launched by the University and College Union (UCU), the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (Niace), the National Association for Teaching English and other Community Languages to Adults (Natecla), the Refugee Council and other concerned bodies to 'lobby the government' to reverse plans to end automatic fee remission on free English classes for asylum seekers. In a briefing paper published on 11 January, 2006, the Refugee Council detailed the real risks associated with limiting the ability of asylum seekers and refugees to learn English. "For refugees, limiting access to English classes will increase the difficulties they already face in building new lives in the UK and finding work," the paper said. Many refugees are unemployed or in jobs which don't use their skills and experience, and refugee communities are among the poorest in the country.

Ironically, in 2001 ESOL became part of the government's Skills for Life programme, sitting alongside literacy and numeracy. Since 1 November 2005, when the Life in the United Kingdom Test was introduced, all refugees applying for citizenship have to pass that test, of which language is a crucial part, before they are 'naturalised'. There has also been a lot of fuss lately about the amount of money spent on translation and interpretation, and such changes will obviously increase the need for translation and interpretation in public services (unless the next move by the government is to ban asylum seekers and refugees from these services!).

Australia: More race hate from the political and mass media establishment

18-01-2007 07:22

All we're going to get is islamophobia
Big media switches over to super race hate campaigns again no doubt to cover up for John Howard, while he gets a buzz in Broome WA on holidays? Or is this what we're going to get until their big media and political establishment can once again shrug off their responsibilities and complicity in their wide spread lies and hate at home and their killing in Iraq, which includes torture, and rendition. Once again this is about what someone is alleged to have said, all ears open. But what about corruption who's going to deal with that? Hey Howard? What about you Dud? No not big media! If it's left up to big media all we're going to get is islamophobia because it suits them, is divisive and is a great way to cover-up for their lack of responsibility. Thanks!

Sleaze Vaz was 'champion' of Muslims against Rushdie in 1989!

17-01-2007 14:42

The disgraced 'ethnic' MP Keith Sleaze Vaz has had a quite hectic 24 hours in the media and Westminster spotlight. He is now part of an almost ubiquitous gang of India-capitalism-Right-linked spin operatives doing what Blair has been doing - promoting British commercial and related interests on the huge market for capitalism that is many [and the mainly westernised centres in the selected, northern and southern belt] states of India. Vaz hit the British PMQs this lunchtime. As he did Jon Snow on Channel 4 News last night. On the surface, on the issue of Shilpa Shetty being allegedly bullied and racistly attacked on Channel 4 CBBH. So who is reviving the career and the operation - of Sleaze Vaz. The resurfacing of the Slimy, Sleazy Vaz spells political and democratic disaster for most of the disenfranchised ethnicity-described people in the UK
