BNP's Subway fiasco led to bridge disaster in Sunderland

As if the story about the BNP's Lie Lorry getting stuck under a bridge in Sunderland wasn't funny enough by itself, an update on the event posted on Indymedia has given us the backstory that led up to the bridge disaster.

On August 25th, the BNP announced a national call-out for a demonstration outside the Subway outlet in Pallion, Sunderland. The BNP doesn't give a toss about animal rights usually but has been inspired to appear to care by the English Defence League's aggressive stance against halal slaughter.

The BNP's attempts to appear to be as active as the EDL over halal has nothing to do with any ethical stance because the BNP doesn't have one, but everything to do with its urgent need for new members and its increasing desperation to engage the public's interest.

Skegness abattoir controversy attracts fascists

Recent proposals to reopen an abattoir in Skegness have attracted local opposition, with a facebook group and online petition set up. The Heath Road abattoir closed down in January after it ran into financial difficulties , and the proposed re-opening has generated opposition because slaughter methods used there would be halal. Although the initial opposition was not overly linked to the far-right, fascists have been quick to take an interest in the issue, with the BNP’s Lincolnshire Coastal branch adopting it as their main campaigning theme. Other groups have been sniffing around the issue as well, and it’s certain that none would have criticised the abattoir reopening if it were to be staffed by “indigenous” knifemen.

Israeli court finds that Rachel Corrie's death was a 'regrettable accident'

The judge in a civil case in Haifa over the death of Rachel Corrie, a US Palestine solidarity activist who was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer while trying to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes in 2003, has ruled that the Israeli state is not culpable.

Kingsley Burrell March for Justice, Sat 18th

On Saturday 200 people attended a second protest in memory of Kingsley Burrell who died in Police Custody in March 2011.

A year after the death of Kingsley Burrell no one has been charged and his body has still not been released to his grieving family for burial and a full inquest has yet to be held.
