Oakington detention :: noborder protests

07-08-2003 14:34

Video
Video, multiple formats, 4:08 minutes. A group of concerned Cambridge residents recently demonstrated in front of the detention centre in nearby Oakington, where asylum-seekers are detained while their claims are being processed and (usually) rejected. Inmates in the detention centre have recently been engaging in hunger strikes and civil disobedience to protest conditions inside the camp and the extraordinarily long length of their imprisonment. The facility's regulations state that people should be kept inside for 7-10 days, but some inmates have been detained there for over two months.

The video is available in the following formats:

English people are ignorant and racist when it comes to Wales and its culture.

04-08-2003 21:57

A couple of weeks ago, I can’t remember which newspaper it was, one of the tabloids decided that North Wales is the rudest place in the United Kingdom. They complained that the people in the shops or pubs started talking Welsh as soon as you came in there. But of course that didn’t have anything to do with the English people coming in there, people have always spoken Welsh there. Just to give you an idea - speaking another language is seen as rude in the United Kingdom. It’s not seen as anything positive, as building a multilingual, multicultural environment'.

This is one of the comments that Simon Thomas makes when he describes the attitudes he meets in his job. He claims that English people in general are ignorant when it comes to Wales and its culture.

It is about the life that I have personally received from the United States government and its agencies for last many years. It is about Systematic and Deliberate Human Destruction. It is about US agencies engaging in denial of Universally Acceptable Human Rights. It is about the HUMAN RIGHTS of one COMMON MAN and his family. NOTHING MORE and NOTHING LESS.
