Amiri Baraka New Jersey Assembly Votes to Cut Embattled Poet's Job

The New Jersey General Assembly approved a measure today to eliminate the post of state poet laureate. The legislation would effectively remove the poet, Amiri Baraka, who had caused a furor with his poem referring to the 9/11 attacks.

Exeter Respect Festival 2003 - Update

Krynki noborder camp has come to an end

The 4th anti-border camp in Poland has come to a finish. About 150 people took part at its peak; there were people from many countries there, and many opportunities to get to know people, network, make plans for the future etc.

James Glenn White, 47, was arrested May 9 while waiting for a shipment from the United States. Police said they found an AR-15 assault rifle, a pistol and a machine to make bullets in a refrigerator that White was to pick up that day.

America keen to exploit boom in Africa’s black gold

CRS has been campaigning for greater transparency in the international oil industry in an effort to stamp out corruption and ensure that oil revenues are used to improve the lives of impoverished Africans, the bulk of whom live on less than $1 a day.

During his visit, Mr Bush is expected to emphasise American support for good governance and respect for human rights. But CRS doubts that such values will be allowed to get in the way of US strategic issues.

“The US has identified increasing African oil imports as an issue of national security and has used diplomacy to court African producers regardless of their record on transparency, democracy, or human rights,” Mr Gary said

Some of the posters read "Bush, the mass murderer", "Bloodsucking vampire", "Jou ma se bush", "Behind every bush is a terrorist", and "Bush you won't rape our minds".

Bush's Backyard Surprise, Houston, Texas

A group by the name of "Bush's Backyard Surprise" passed out flyers at an Independence Day Celebration in Houston. The flyers provided information about the Patriot Acts. The Bush Administration ran the first of the Patriot Acts through Congress soon after September 11, 2001. The Patriot Acts severely limit our civil rights and jeopardize the safety and privacy of immigrants. This is second of many anti-bush events.

Chief Rabbi: Britain is 'besieged'

The Chief Rabbi has warned that Britain is being "besieged" by asylum seekers and has advocated regional refugee camps outside Britain in an attempt to deal with the problem.

In an interview with The Telegraph Dr Jonathan Sacks, the spiritual leader of 280,000 British Jews, said that new policies were needed.

Dr Sacks himself admitted that were it not for Britain's willingness to accept Jewish refugees in the past, "almost no Jew in Britain would be alive today".

From the 2nd to the 7th of july a Noborder Camp is taking place in Krynki, Poland to protest against tightened visa regulations which are imposed on Poland to join the EU and in order to become a full member, it has to obey and impose Schengen Regulations to its Eastern neighbours, such as Russia, Belarussia and Ukraine.
