17-11-2007 18:12

Ok, being uber-cool in jeans, t-shirt and Ugg boots on a stage in front of 300 environmentalists of varying shades is not, in itself, reason to have someone walk out on you, but I did give it at least 2 minutes before I left. Here’s why.

Thoughts on evolving strategy

17-11-2007 13:47

While battles are fought against the police, protests raged against politicians and corporations, I want to raise the more thorny issue of what do we, as activists, do about the "common people", the general mass of "ordinary" people who make up the bulk of consumers (and producers)?
In this short piece I argue that it is necessary to obtain support from people in the street for a number of reasons: first, because of the groundswell support that this group could lend to the cause(s) and second, because it then becomes that much more tenuous for the authorities to dismiss the cause(s) we fight for as radical, or reflecting fringe interests.

Blackbird & The Blackhole

15-11-2007 14:56

During the Northern Rock bank run, the press were blamed by banking executives for scaring depositors. Since then public criticism has been scant, despite the massive taxpayer bail-out of 'Blackbird' ( the Rocks codename) -a patient that remains catatonic. Meanwhile, the broader 'subprime lending crisis' is likely to be exposed soon as the response to global mortgage fraud.

Unfettered capitalism is not the globalisation people want

The U.S. is all over the place, with both covert and overt military programs. France, England, Canada, Belgium, Libya, Israel and China are all involved. Massacre of Anti-Globalisation Demonstrators in India

11-11-2007 00:05

The Narmada Bachao Andolan campaign just sent out an urgent appeal for help.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM], is currently massacring the people of the area Nandigram, where there have been rising protest against the establishments of Special Economic Zones. SEZs allow corporations the right to evict entire populations to construct heavy industrial projects. The SEZ in Nandigram would allow Indonesia's largest conglomerate, the Salim Group, to forcefully acquire 57km2 of land and affect 40,000 people to create a chemical hub. On the 4th of March this year 14 demonstrators were killed by a mixture of Police and CPM members, dressed as Police. Todays attempt to force the people of Nandigram from their land is far, far graver.

From the ashes of despair, the seeds of solidarity might spring?

10-11-2007 12:06

Faced with the pervasive onslaught and destruction of the ecosystems, the natural ecology, the social ecology, and the psychological ecology, by the way of the world as it is today, I express my frustration and impotence with traditional forms of protest and in the naked vulnerability of my lack of ability to positively influence the flow of events, I ask for input and hope to plant the seeds of solidarity.
