Demo at high commission demanding release of Bangladeshi political prisoners

06-09-2007 23:39

There was a demonstration outside the Bangladesh high commision in London today to protest against the manner in which student protests are being crushed in that country and also against the arrest and torture of academics on bogus charges of incitement. The protests occuring in Bangladesh against the 7 month old non-party caretaker government are as a result of the inhumane uprooting of roadside traders, markets and slums, the continually rising price of essentials and the privatisation of many industries at the dicate of the egregious IMF and World Bank.

06-09-2007 00:19

Dr. Carol P. Araullo, with Rep. Satur Ocampo, in a people's rally in Manila
Colluding with U.S. and Filipino reactionaries, Dutch fascist authorities arrested Jose Maria Sison, a Filipino political refugee, and raided the National Democratic Front International Information Office in Holland last Aug. 27. This is a clear example of State Terrorism working on behalf of predatory imperialist capital. All progressives and democrats everywhere should protest this outrage and support the Filipino people's struggle for justice, equality, and true independence.

Trial in Agrigento: No to the criminalisation of solidarity

03-09-2007 11:35

Since August 22, 2007, seven Tunisian fishermen have been on trial in Agrigento (Sicily), accused of “assisting illegal immigration”. They risk up to 15 years imprisonment. Prosecuted as human traffickers, what they did was in fact just their basic duty of solidarity: on August 8, near the island of Lampedusa, they picked up 44 passengers from a boat in distress at sea and brought them to the harbour.
Without their intervention the shipwrecked people - including two pregnant women and two children - would propably have suffered the same fate as the thousands of migrants and refugees who in the last years have drowned while trying to reach the European coasts.

Greenpeace activists paint "Australia Pushing Export Coal"
Twelve Greenpeace activists have been arrested at the world's biggest coal port at Newcastle, 160km north of Sydney, after painting the message "Australia Pushing Export Coal" on the side of a coal ship, The Endeavour, and unfurling a large banner in Chinese calling on China to be cautious of John Howard and George Bush’s attempts to sabotage Kyoto. The protest comes at the start of the 2007 APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) forum meeting being hosted by Australian Prime Minister John Howard in Sydney 2-9 September 2007, and being attended by USA President George Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Hu Jintao and other Pacific rim leaders.

Porter: Kill More Iraqis or Pay $9 per Gallon

01-09-2007 22:28

No doubt, for a large number of Americans, it is a good enough excuse: “Gasoline prices could rise to about $9 per gallon if the United States withdraws troops from Iraq prematurely, Rep. Jon Porter said he was told on a trip to Iraq that ended this week,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports. “To a person, they said there would be genocide, gas prices in the U.S. would rise to eight or nine dollars a gallon, al-Qaida would continue its expansion, and Iran would take over that portion of the world if we leave,” said the Nevada Congress critter.

The evidence demanded by the anonymous poster that Crossrail beneficiaries such as US company Bechtel is corrupt and the knighting of Adrian Montague, the chair of Crossrail is a long-line of the English establishment recognising and rewarding corrupt, barbaric and anti-humanitarian and anti-environmental activities can be found below. The anonymous poster who uses the word NIMBY made lots of accusations but offered no evidence other than an empty NIMBY attack and could not even bring themselves to give their own identity - "nationalism is the last bastion of the scoundrel" is your identity.

' Even I question the 'truth' about 9/11 ' - Fisk

27-08-2007 11:18

Robert Fisk, in his article 'Even I question the 'truth' about 9/11' seems to be denigrating, by association, the many science and engineering professors, airline pilots, ex-air traffic controllers, ex-military personnel and other intelligent people who have been questioning the official story of 9/11 ever since they first noticed far more of the many discrepancies than he points out.

October mobilisation against IMF/World Bank

24-08-2007 09:48

The 50 Years Is Enough Network and our allies are calling for a National Mobilization in Washington DC against the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank during their annual meetings, from October 19-21
(activists' air miles to travel to mobilisations abroad are justified in this regard as being for the wider good, but you can always take measures to be more carbon neutral such as funding ecologically suitable tree planting somewhere - however, this would all ensure that the cost of flying across the Atlantic would be prohibitive to many of us!) Therefore, maybe "we" should do actions over in the UK?

Imperialism, 'Anti-Imperialism', and the Continuing Relevance of Rosa Luxemburg

22-08-2007 23:14

The liquidity crisis currently wiping billions off global stock markets is just the tip of a very big iceberg. Beneath the credit crunch and incipient insolvency crisis lie the economic and political crisis of the USA’s global reign, claims Loren Goldner. But will this mean global depression, wars and intensified authoritarianism, or a renewed opportunity for communism? Goldner returns to the theories of Marx and Luxemburg to examine today's financial and military imperialism, and its left wing ‘anti-imperialist’ mirror
