Fake Congressional Opposition to War

16-03-2007 01:13 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | History | World

Rhetoric and wishy proposals with no chance of passage are once thing, real bipartisan action with teeth another, and so far there's none from either House with key senators and congressmen voicing the usual boilerplate about not wanting to cut off funding the troops because we have to support them. Their kind of support means letting them die or get maimed and be disabled for life for imperialism on the march. Some support.

Empire as a Way of Life, Part 2

15-03-2007 11:48 | Analysis | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Audio

The current imperial slaughter in the Middle East, justified by the "Global War on Terror", that has resulted in at least 600,000 deaths in Iraq, is nothing new — the U.S. Empire has a long and sordid history of genocidal mass murder.

The history of the US imperialism and Empire is the subject of a series of ten monthly seminars from Dr John Marciano, "Empire as a Way of Life". Attached is a recording of the second of these seminars and the text upon which it was based. The first 6 of these seminars have taken place and the intention is to have the whole series published on this site; the last 4 will take place between now and June.

This seminar, recorded on 17th October 2006 by the L.A. Sound Posse, runs for 35 minutes and includes the discussion following. It has been made available under a Creative Commons license. If this recording is broadcast please let the L.A. Sound Posse know. This recording was originally made available on the A-Infos Radio Project site.

The following text has been reproduced here with the kind permission of Dr John Marciano and he can be contacted at johnmarciano@mac.com. He introduced this series of seminars in the following way:

A fundamental purpose of our meetings is to understand the systemic nature of the U.S. Empire and the economic and military imperialism that is its lifeblood. The historian William Appleman Williams argues that empire became "a way of life" in the U.S., a "combination of patterns of thought and action that, as it becomes habitual and institutionalized, defines the thrust and character of a culture and society." This "way of life" has convinced many U.S. "Americans" they have a right or "manifest destiny" to impose their political and economic policies upon others.

Dr John Marciano is Professor Emeritus, State University of New York at Cortland, where he taught courses on social and historical foundations of education and class, gender and race.

Pelosi and Dems Taken to Task by AIPAC, Cheney

14-03-2007 10:09 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Iraq | World

It seems a neocon hysteria has washed over Congress, enveloping even Dems, who are presumably “liberal,” whatever that means. As it turns out, according to the “authoritative” Congressional Quarterly daily report, more than a few Democrats were opposed to Pelosi inserting language in an Iraq occupation spending bill that futilely attempted to prevent the neocons from launching their shock and awe campaign against the people of Iran.

Australians have become a victim of terrorism

13-03-2007 21:30 | Analysis | Repression | Terror War | World

GENOCIDE
The John Howard government's terrorist antics have been the most dangerous acts of aggression on sovereign nations for 200 years. Why wouldn't people fear some form of retaliation or false flag terrorist act now? What you do is what you get! So why do it? Why take the risk? Then tell us about the risks because of what you do? Who should be scared? John Howard should be scared at the next election. We should be scared that he was elected last time and that the mass media power help reinforce that fear by propping up a war criminal and his governments terrorist antics.

Introducing A Game As Old As Empire

13-03-2007 21:26 | Analysis | Globalisation | World

After the Economic Hitmen retire from their cushy jobs of raping nations under "legal cover", they write confessionals as victims of conscience. Should we have let go Adolph Eichmann too had he written a confessional? The latter was the harbinger of misery to millions of peoples for a short span of a few years with just the stroke of a pen, and we tried him in Jerusalem. Whereas the former are the harbingers of the continued entrapment of entire nations in inextricable systems of poverty and misery for generations and they walk free in suits and ties, sometimes even heading prestigious economic institutions. Should we applaud the former EHM and absolve them of their own past monumental crimes just because they are revealing it all now post faits accomplis and laughing their way to the bank? Or should we use this information in informing our own Moral Activism to prevent future fait accompli? Should we demand from them that they deposit all the proceeds of their confessional writings in trust for the benefit of the nations they raped? Should we do something about the empire's "legal covers" and condemn them unequivocally as deliberate enablers of multi-color-collared crimes against humanity by the emperors? The choice of Moral-Activism is ours! To exercise this choice efficaciously however, we must be addressing the issues at the right levels of abstraction! The highest order bits are in the intellectual space!

Global Warming: Truth or Dare?

13-03-2007 19:28 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Sheffield | World

NOT THE GREATEST POTENTIAL THREAT TO HUMANITY

Global warming is often presented as the greatest potential threat to humankind and as the greatest environmental and ecological threat on the planet. It is also presented as a problem that could be solved or contained by determined international collaboration - by political will if it were present.

We are almost certainly in the last days of a countdown to nuclear war. Israel has made plans to attack Iran in a war of aggression, which will probably begin with some staged attack such as the attack on the Liberty in 1967.

12-03-2007 10:56 | Analysis | Terror War | World

The following article by Christopher Ketcham was shunned by the mainstream media in the USA, Counterpunch was the only publication which was prepared to run it, the story behind this article is told in this article:

Cheering Movers and Art Student Spies: Was Israel Tracking the Hijackers Before the 9/11 Attacks?
A new article in the newsletter Counterpunch examines unresolved questions over whether Israeli agents were tracking the 9/11 hijackers before September 11th. ABC’s 20/20, The Forward, and Salon.com have all covered the story. But where’s the follow up? We speak to the author of the article, Christopher Ketcham; Counterpunch editor Alexander Cockburn, and Marc Perelman, the Forward reporter who did one of the first reports on the story in 2002.

Bush, ‘political cadaver’ -- It’s all but (over)

11-03-2007 12:14 | Analysis | Globalisation | Other Press | World

There is something politically odd about Bush’s tour of various Latin American countries. South American nations were ‘lost’ to the U.S. some time ago – the price paid for America’s fixation in the Middle East. Bush is loathed internationally but is particularly despised in Latin America. The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez accurately called Bush a “political cadaver” and led 20,000 Argentinian supporters in the chant, “gringo go home”, during his counter-tour of the region.
