The History of stealing ideas - an anniversary

31-07-2008 17:24 | Analysis | Globalisation | History | World

On this day the 31st of July in 1790, one Samuel Hopkins (aged 47) made a piece of history when his improved method "in the making of Pot ash and Pearl ash by a new Apparatus and Process" became the first US patent with George Washington's signature. This was a way of protecting Samuel Hopkins improvement of an Ethiopian idea which had been used globally for several hundred years. A important milestone in the history of property as theft had been passed.

"As of February 2008, the PTO has granted over 7,950,000 patents"

We now live in a world where everything from gizmo to gimmick, nicknack to genetic code is filed away under a patent or patent-pending.

30-07-2008 18:12 | Analysis | Other Press | Repression | World

if i needed a thumb I would thumb it at you
A long time ago in a galaxy just down memory lane a young Glaswegian Gary McKinnon made the news. 4 years later he was still making it :-
 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/05/339905.html

Since then he has had documentaries made about him, a support website set up for him, been to courts and even the Lords. He spoke movingly about not wanting to be sent to Gitmo. Quite sensible too.

In Gitmo no-one hears you scream.

Hugo Chavez has been broadcasting his weekly Sunday telly show almost without fail now for many years. It both gives him an opportunity to get close to his people and also get up the noses of his enemies. Yesterday's show saw him speak of Colombia's "operation Jaque" which saw Ingrid Betancourt rescued on her 2321st day of captivity and the use by Colombia of the red cross insignia of the International Red Cross society as well as the logo of the pan-American TV network "TeleSur".

An Egyptian Cult - Pictures taken secretly inside Dublin Central Freemasons Hall

27-07-2008 20:03 | Analysis | Culture | History | World

Today Freemasons may deny that any part of their cult hearkens back to the pagan gods of the Nile. Yet in Freemasons Hall, Dublin, home of the world's second oldest Grand Lodge, the Holy Royal Arch Room contains two large sphinxes and other sculptures aping Ancient Egypt. In Philadelphia, USA, the Masonic Temple boasts 'the finest specimen of Egyptian decoration outside Egypt'. Even London's Great Eastern Hotel at Liverpool Street station has a magnificent Egyptian Temple for lodges to rent for their ritual 'nights out'.

It all ends with a T-shirt - Chavez & the King of Spain hug & make up.

25-07-2008 14:50 | Analysis | Culture | History | World

neither of them do shut up. therein lies the twain lie of global class war
The Spanish speaking world gave the English speaking world a simple phrase to remember & as many millions did put on their mobile as a ringtone at the 17th Iberian Americas summit in 2007. Hugo Chavez speaking out of turn heckled the Spanish PM Zapatero gurgling away in fine form over how Aznar was a fascist. To which Zapatero (ZP) replied in exasperation that Aznar had been democratically elected (presumedly by the fascist half of Spain's voters). Hugo "the man" Chavez didn't stop his harrangue. Finally the King of Spain, Mr Bourbon shouted "porque no te calles" complete with upside down question and exclamation marks in the familiar form meaing "Why don't you shut up?!"

"Based on advice given to Donald Rumsfeld by Defense Department lawyers regarding the use of isolation at Guantánamo, when the lawyers warned that it was "not known to have been generally used for interrogation purposes for longer than 30 days," Marri has now been held in solitary confinement for 66 times longer than the amount of time recommended by the Pentagon's own lawyers (this figure includes the six months that he spent in isolation in Peoria County Jail and the Metropolitan Correction Center in New York, before being transferred to Charleston)."

Is the 9/11 "Pentagon Hole" a Psyop to Distract from Real Questions?

18-07-2008 13:24 | Analysis | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

It's understandable some believe "no 757" hit the Pentagon due to the heavy promotion of that idea, but there's no actual evidence. The theory is being used to mock and discredit the 9/11 Truth Movement, & to give Congress and the media a reason to avoid real questions about 9/11. The military drilled for 9/11-style attacks, & they came after years of warnings that Al Qaeda intended to hijack planes for missiles.
