Peak Oil Activists Gather, Plan for Hard Times, Will Lead the Way

28-11-2007 14:49

YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO – Former professor and author David Korten told close to 300 applauding peak oil activists that they are not a fringe minority but the leading edge of a super-majority "and it's time we start acting like it."

Korten issued his rallying call in October at the "Fourth U.S. Conference on Peak Oil and Community Solutions" where activists from 30 some states discussed ways to respond to declining oil production and other coming planetary woes. Korten joined a dozen other speakers in "Planning for Hard Times," the theme of the three-day conference sponsored by Community Solution at Antioch College.

"The day of reckoning for our profligate ways has arrived," Korten said. "Peak oil, climate chaos, exhaustion of freshwater, species extinction, financial collapse, and social disintegration are causing a great unraveling." Now is the time, Korten said, for a great turning from a 5000-year history of empire, driven today by a suicidal competition over the earth's remaining resources, to a cooperative earth community which shares resources to maintain healthy communities, families and natural systems.

Think Not 'Global' Warming - Think 'Oceans' Warming

26-11-2007 19:20

Global warming seems mysterious to most of
us. A 1 degree rise in annual global temperature
sounds minuscule, doesn't it....... until you
remember that the oceans are involved ........
... very heavily involved.

The oceans are simply unfathomably immense!
Their mass is actually incomprehensible, being
70% of the earth's surface (310 million cubic miles).
If you could stack water 100 cubic miles long and
100 cubic miles wide, that column would reach
31,000 miles into outer space. That is truly an
astronomical amount of water!

Radioactive Ammunition Fired in Middle East May Claim More Lives Than Hiroshima

25-11-2007 17:23

By firing radioactive ammunition, the U.S., U.K., and Israel may have triggered a nuclear holocaust in the Middle East that, over time, will prove deadlier than the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan.
So much ammunition containing depleted uranium(DU) has been fired, asserts nuclear authority Leuren Moret, "The genetic future of the Iraqi people for the most part, is destroyed."

Screw Wildlife - Let's Play Golf!

22-11-2007 15:39

I have just got off the phone after speaking to Neil Hobday, the Project Director for the proposed Trump Golf links golf resort development in eastern Scotland. I would like to say that he seemed a reasonable man, but that would be untrue because despite trying to interest him in the views of the rest of life on the irrepairable damage that will be caused to 1400 acres of pristine sand dune habitat, he was clearly stuck in the lie that the economy was far more important than our life support system.
