Cornwall goes Critical

At midday this Sat 5th May cyclists gathered in the town square in Falmouth for the towns first Critical Mass bike ride. The celebration of combustion free liberty, picnics and ever so slightly fancy dress boasted nearly 50 riders.

Three New Solar Tech Breakthroughs Now

1) Research scientists at Rice University have
devised a new way to make solar panels out
of quantum dots.

They use cetyltrimethylammonium bromide
instead of the standard alkylphosphonic acid
compounds which makes the process safer
and much cheaper.

Anti-nuclear activists needle German power giant's annual general meeting

Anti-nuclear activists have been demonstrating outside and inside the annual meeting of stockholders of one of Germany’s electricity giants, the transnational EON. A coalition of environmental groups protested in Essen against EON’s plans to expand nuclear power production. Some of the countries where EON is planning new nukes are Finland, Great Britain, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.

The Riverworks Barrage across the River Ribble is one step closer to reality today after Preston City Council decided, against the advice of local people and environmentalists, to apply to the North West Development Agency for funds for a feasibility study into their plans to build a barrage across the Ribble and 4000 homes and businesses in it's floodplain - plans that would threaten the precious environment of the Ribble Estuary and raise the flood risk to local residents.

The Government are consulting on the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO) - which sets targets for the use of biofuels. An increasing share of biofuels comes from the global South and is grown at the expense of rainforests, local communities and food sovereignty. Oxford councillors express doubts over plans to destroy tranquil meadow

Today's meeting of the Oxford Strategic Development Control Committee (SDCC) was inconclusive. Plans to destroy the tranquil wildlife haven, Warneford Meadow, have been delayed while councillors seek further clarification from the applicants. This could take months, and gives environmental campaigners a chance to focus their energies on the ongoing application for Town Green status for the Meadow.
