INTERNATIONAL DAYS OF ACTION AGAINST THE ICELANDIC STATE AND ALCOA

26-08-2006 12:02

The Icelandic highlands are the last great expanse of true wilderness left in Western Europe. Now the country's hydroelectric potential has been targeted by multinational corporations, who intend to establish large-scale heavy industry in these hitherto pristine hinterlands. These multinational vandals - willingly helped by the Icelandic government - are about to produce an environmental catastrophe of unprecedented proportions.

Belgium: Borsbeek Forest Occupation Eviction Threat

26-08-2006 11:33

After three weeks of logging of oaks and piecemeal evictions of treehouses in Borsbeek Fortress III action camp, many trees are still standing. The forest is being destroyed because they are in the way of Antwerp Airport, a small business airport which wants to upgrade and allow for larger planes to land. GroenFront! has occupied the forest, a habitat of endangered bats, to prevent it's destruction. A larger scale eviction is expected for this coming Monday (Aug. 28th)
Over the past three weeks activists have been delaying the 'forest maintenance' significantly by chaining themselves to barricades or the logger's machinery and by occupying trees using walkways, platforms and swings.

A small but determined group gathered in Gothenburg on Friday evening to remember the victims of climate change. Gothenburg was one of 28 Critical Masses around the world where this was remembered.

This Weeks SchNEWS - Ready? Charge! - Surviving The Day After Tomorrow

25-08-2006 10:50

How many media articles does it take to change to an energy saving lightbulb?
The double-whammy of peak oil and climate change have recently become much more mainstream, but the (if you’ll pardon the expression) ‘roadmap’ to a sustainable future is still very sketchy. Of course our governments are still too focussed on unsustainable growth of an oil-based economy to do anything much about either issue. But there’s little point in waiting for them to sort it out, when there’s so many positive ideas and capacity for real change to be found at the community and grassroots level.

Map out the wild/free food

25-08-2006 10:33

An idea put forward by a WWOOF host. Local Agenda 21 grants really should be available for mapping out/documenting wild food - here's some reasoning to put forward in persuading the authorities... a promising idea. Please comment, but tactfully - some people who post seem to be socially inept.

The Problem With...Tourism

24-08-2006 22:11

The human race is a race of travellers; we have imagined, discovered, explored, charted and opened up almost all of the Earth's land surface, and are rarely content to stop moving. Given the time and (usually) money, we have an instinctive urge to travel; whether this be to feed our imaginations, stimulate our senses or satisfy some less clear urge that we do not fully understand, we travel. Six and a half billion humans with itchy feet is not something we should take lightly.

Mersey waste dumped on Wrexham - report on today's protest

24-08-2006 12:46

Mersey Waste Holdings faced determined opposition this morning when the first lorry carrying waste arrived at Hafod Quarry, Johnstown, near Wrexham. Anxious to get the lorry into the site with the minimum of delay, the Police used heavy-handed tactics to drag protesters out of the way with scant regard for health and safety. Welsh media were in attendance but didn't manage to film the blockaders being dragged away.
