Teresa Lau Manuel Must Stay in Leicester

Teresa Lau Manuel Teresa came to Leicester on 25 March 2004. She spoke Kikongo and Portuguese, and so went to Leicester College to learn English. She followed this with a Child Care course at Leicester College that she completed in July 2006. Her certificate says "to have achieved it required determination and skill, qualities which help you shape a valuable career". Teresa now faces removal from the UK on Friday 20th October 2006.

Congolese asylum seeker, removed to Kinshasa, imprisoned and beaten

On 6 October, 2006, Mulai Mukendi, an asylum seeker from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was removed from the UK and taken to the country's capital Kinshasa, upon which she was subjected to imprisonment and beatings for several days.

Kenny Peter's Inquest Points to Asylum Failures

On 15 September, an inquest found that yet another asylum seeker had taken his life in detention. Unusually, in such cases, in addition to a self-harm verdict, the jury also listed the numerous ways in which the system, supposed to care for vulnerable detainees, had failed to do so.

ARC's Ceremony in Birmingham on Oct 7

As part of the Transnational Day of Action Against Migration Control, Birmingham Anti-Racist Campaign is planning an action on 7 October in Birmingham city centre, where we will hold a ceremony, with tombstones and a coffin, to acknowledge the destitution, detention and death of asylum seekers in this country and through this country's increasing deportation to other countries where imprisonment/death is imminent.

Local Human Rights Groups Challenge Musharraf on Detainees

Amnesty International groups across the West Midlands are calling on Pakistan’s President Musharraf to reveal the fate of Pakistan’s ‘war on terror’ detainees. This comes as Amnesty International published a new report today saying that hundreds of terror suspects have ‘disappeared’ after being taken into custody, many by Pakistan’s intelligence services.
