British Government rejects Scientology petition - again

Earlier this year, a petition was submitted to the British government calling for an investigation into links between UK Police and the Church of Scientology, a notorious international cult with an array of front groups at its disposal. The petition was dismissed out of hand, with a quote from a representative not even involved with the forces in question.

More recently, a second petition was submitted, this one calling for the British government to refrain from granting the Church of Scientology religious (and therefore tax-exempt) status. Today Number 10 issued its response. Take a guess what it was.

What really happened in Beirut?

The following article appeared on GlobalResearch.ca yesterday. It details what recently happened in Lebanon (armed clashes between Opposition and Loyalist forces), with some background and analysis of the deep, and sometimes hidden, reasons behind the conflict. The reason why I'm reposting it here is that most of what we read about the incidents was so distorted, misinformed or simply simplistic. Even a journalist like Robert Fisk sometimes went for the easy line: "this was a proxy war between Iran and the US".

In solidarity with refugees, dead and living

A few dozen people braved the chilling cold last Friday, on the eve of Refugee Week, to protest against the government's treatment of refugees and the horrible conditions they are forced to live in, and to remember those who died while seeking asylum here due to self-harm, denial of medical treatment, destitution, hazardous working conditions or racist attacks. Organised by the Birmingham Anti-Racist Campaign (ARC), the annual Refugee Sleep-out in the grounds of St Philip's Cathedral saw the usual candlelight vigil and name-reading to remember those unfortunate victims who took their own life or died as a result of the fucked-up immigration policies. This was followed by speeches, live music and vegan food. A few then slept there over night in solidarity with destitute asylum seekers.

Solidarity actions for Sean Kirtley

"One More Cage To Empty" - Free Sean Kirtley Sean along with many others had his door smashed in and his house raided by police back in 2006 as part of “Operation Tornado” which was designed to start a case and try and lock up peaceful animal rights campaigners using new SOCPA legislation which was created to protect the vivisection industry from effective campaigners such as Sean and the Sequani defendants.

On May 30th 2008 Sean was found guilty of "conspiracy to interfere with contractual relationships so as to harm an animal research organisation" and was sentenced to four and a half years for his role in running the SSAT (Stop Sequani Animal Testing) website.

Since his imprisonment there have been solidarity actions from Yorkshire, the south west and as far away as Mexico.

Fujitsu Strike Birmingham: You can have your Logo but hands off our jobs!

Where's that Fujitsu plant in Birmingham? Fujitsu workers from the Communication Workers Union (C.W.U.) went on strike yesterday and picketed the Birmingham telecommunications plant in the blazing sun to protest against losing their jobs. 140 jobs are destined to go if Fujitsu decides to end production in Birmingham and take their work to Texas in the United States. If it hadn't been for the picket outside we wouldn't have found the site at Birmingham Business Park as management had taken the company’s logo down at the entrance of the plant just before the strike claiming it needed cleaning, whilst workers were convinced that the corporation wanted to keep any bad publicity to an absolute minimum.

At the Birmingham 'Climate Change festival'

the sponsors Anticapitalist climate activists visited the 'Climate Change Festival' in Birmingham this week to protest at the sponsorship of the event by E.On, the very company which this years climate camp will be targeting, and by Crest Nicholson, a major development company known for it's dodgy developments of cheap, and utterly environmentally aggressive build, and to raise awareness of Climate Camp.

NETCU and Judge Ross crucify civil liberties.

Last week Sean Kirtley was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison followed by 5 years of draconian limits on his everyday life all in all a 10 year sentence. Those of us who have protested alongside him testify that he was never abusive or threatening, he did not cause criminal damage, he did not harm anyone or threaten to. He did what many activists of every denomination do, he handed out leaflets, put posts on an inoffensive website, held a banner (eg stop Sequani animal testing) and vocally expressed his disgust at experiments on animals without the use of expletives or threats.

Home Office plans full spectrum electronic surveillance of all citizens

The Home Office is considering plans to develop a centralized surveillance system to track in real time every kind of electronic activity undertaken by all citizens. The project is being driven by the intelligence services and has not yet been discussed by ministers. The surveillance would include a database recording a profile of web activity, emails, and phone taps for every citizen in the UK.
