Peaceful Anti-cuts Demonstration in Liverpool Attacked by Merseyside Police

I arrived at the demonstration just after 4pm. Exchange Street West, to side of town hall, was already closed off by police, presumably to “facilitate” the demo. Councillors had already entered the building and there was around 100 people outside, more milling around than anything. The atmosphere was subdued compared to recent protests in the same location. The council meeting began a little later and the demonstration moved along the side street to be closer to the council chamber windows and to make itself heard to those inside. After some time elapsed with protestors shouting slogans and demanding answers from those within the council chamber, but basically milling around in the barricaded area on the side street, an attempt was made by the police to kettle the demonstration using officers on foot and mounted officers, and the situation immediately became tense. Search for audience members from re-enactment to attend unique film screening

My research is trying to find out what art works like Jeremy Deller's 'The Battle of Orgreave' - mean to the people who were directly affected by the events portrayed and I would very much like to reach them to invite them to the free screening on 28 Jan in Leeds. Read more >>

BBC finally admits western imperialist forces toppled the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya

British special forces were deployed on the ground in order to help the UK's allies - the Libyan revolutionaries often called the National Transitional Council or NTC. Those with a knowledge of the programme insist "they did a tremendous job" and contributed to the final collapse of the Gaddafi regime.
This exposes the apalling collusion of various British left groups and individuals including the SWP, Stop the War, George Galloway and Yvonne Ridley with the forces of western imperialism. Read more >>

Census Refuser Trials Liverpool 17 & 18 Jan. Solidarity and support needed

Sarah and Barry Ledsom

Sarah, Derek and Andy (possibly with others) are in Liverpool Magistrates Court on Tuesday and Wednesday 17 and 18 January for their trials. All are being prosecuted for refusing to complete the 2011 census and all have cited weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin's involvement in the census data processing among their reasons for refusal. Their initial hearings were on 8 December [see report and photos plus background].

Join us inside and outside the court to offer solidarity and support to all the defendants. Vigil and demo outside the court from 9.30am both days. Continue the vigil or watch the proceedings in court from 10am.

Take Action: Northern Foie Gras Peddlers

Force Fed 'til Dead - No Excuse!
Foie gras is shunned by many and is even illegal to produce in the UK. Ducks and geese have pipes forced down their throats daily and grain pumped in, with ruptured throats being a common occurance. This method of farming creates an artificially diseased and swollen liver, causing birds to become imobile. When slaughtered, the liver is removed and sold as foie gras. Read more >>

The Unilever Strike and the Case for Classwide Solidarity

Picketers at Port Sunlight - a village financed by the original company owners
More than two and a half thousand UK-based Unilever staff took strike action today, in protest at the company's plans to attack their pension scheme. But the very fact that such attacks are taking place in the private sector as well as the public sector raises the case for classwide solidarity, and an end to union-imposed isolation. Read more >>
