Asbestos concerns and the Save Spodden Valley campaign were recognised this week by Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown at a national campaign award ceremony.

Save Spodden Valley campaign co-ordinator Jason Addy and web designer Alice Smith were invited to London by the Sheila McKechnie Foundation. The community campaign from Rochdale was nominated for the Consumer Action award sponsored by Which?

Countryside Properties Mayfield development unlawful flyposting...
Rochdale has a problem with illegal flyposting on street furniture next to its busiest roads. Many of the culprits are building companies directing drivers to new multi-million pound developments.

Safety groups are concerned that drivers can be distracted by the illegal signs. Cyclists have expressed particular concern about Countryside Properties PLC advertising its Mayfield housing development.

Over 200 people demonstrated outside Manchester Town Hall -many holding photographs of loved ones lost to asbestos cancer.

The birthplace of the asbestos industry...
Producer Hendrik Verbeure and Cameraman Mark Schellingerhout are Belgian based filmmakers who have just visited the Spodden Valley. They came to Rochdale to film the former Turners Brothers Asbestos site. This visit is central to their 2 hour documentary on asbestos and the diseases caused by exposure to the dust and fibre. The HSE, Env. Agency or the Council don't seem to know where these bags went to
There is still confusion over which government and council agencies have powers and responsibilities over the site of what was the world’s largest asbestos textile factory. A consortium headed by Countryside Properties wants to build 600 homes and a children’s nursery there.

Was the public’s chance to question the council- ‘Gone in 60 seconds’...?
