DAN blocks Whitehall against Welfare Reform Act

Yesterday (Wednesday 3rd December, International Day of Disabled People 2008) at 2pm, activists from the UK Disabled People's Direct Action Network (DAN) and London Coalition Against Poverty (LCAP) blocked traffic both ways on Whitehall, directly outside Downing Street, for over 45 minutes in protest against the new Welfare Reform Act, which replaces Incapacity Benefit with a much more punitive "Employment Support Allowance" and forces disabled people into "workfare" schemes which are effectively free labour for corporations.

Bradford kids, still doing time, 33 days in detention

They had their second bail hearing yesterday and were refused bail. According to their mother the immigration judge wasn't happy with the sureties, so refused to release the children and their parents. It is as ever unacceptable that children 1) are detained and 2) have to suffer the whims of the judiciary as to the conditions/terms that they the judiciary will grant bail. In cases where children are detained for more than seven days and all legal avenues have not been resolved; the 'Children's Commissioner' should be able to step in immediately as an an independent authority, with the authority to release the children on the 'Commissioners' terms.

Solihull protest against the imposition of biometric ID cards on migrants

UK Border Agency Office at 41 Station Road Solihull Yesterday Noborders Birmingham protested against the imposition of biometric ID cards at the UK Border Agency Office in Solihull. They were met by a puzzling disproportionate police response at Dominion Court, 41 Station Road, Solihull - around 12 police officers, including 3 police vans and an evidence gatherer. This may have something to do with the policing of a previous protest around the corner at Sandford House, the home office reporting centre, where hundreds of Congolese demonstrators facing mass deportation occupied the main road  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/birmingham/2007/04/368076.html
